The fabulous glass works with an array ! gf colors, will delight any viewer. It was in Cullowhee that the aeries of biannual exhibitions !prginatedin1974. Recent shows in ;tne series have toured major capitals, including Washington, D.C, and Vienna, Austria, but each show has premiered at the campus of WCU. While the artist receive individual recognition worldwide, Cullowhee is an excellent setting for the exhibition to begin. A aemonstration on glass- blowing was given at 2:00pm on Wednesday, October 1st. Robert ! Levin, one of the artist whose works ,are on display, assisted by David Nicholus, the glass-blowing I instructor at Western, were able to ' demonstrate the techniques used in preparing glass. First, a small ; portion of the melted glass was taken out of a kiln on an iron rod. Secondly, the melted glass was placed in a second kiln, where the temperature is about 2000F, to prepare theglass for shaping. After the glass becomes hot enough, it was taken out to be shaped. Mr. Levin repeatedly heated the glass and shaped it with various tools. When completed, the magnificent glass object was placed in cold storage to harden overnight. The exhibit of North Carolina Glass '86 will be on display until October 29. Admission is free and everyone is invited to attend. An upcoming exhibit to look forward to is "American Art". It captures 100 years of American art on paper. "American Art" will be on display November 3rd at the Belk building. your student entertainment connection Trumpet Recital OPI - Michael Miles, instructor of trumpet at Western Carolina University, will perform Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. in the recital hall of the Music English Building at WCU. Miles' performance is part of the faculty recital series at Western. His recital is free and open to the public. Miles will be accompanied by DeWitt Tipton, piano. Maxie Beaver of the music department faculty will narrate the program. Miles received a bachelor's degree from the Hartt School of Music and a master's degree from Florida State university He has performed with the philharmonic orchestras of Pueblo, Colo., Hartford and New Haven, Conn., and Jacksonville and Tallahasse, Fla. He has made solo appearances with the Denver and Hartt symphony orchestras and the Cullowhee Music Festival Orchestra. Besides teaching music at Western, Miles is principal trumpet with the Ashville Symphony Orchestra. Horror Festival Last Minute Productions will present a festival of horror movies designed to scare you. On Wednesday October 15 the horror classic "Alien" will be shown. This is bound to be a real treat for all. On Wednesday October 22 John Carpenter's "The Fog" will be presented. Finally on Friday October 31, Halloween night, the film "An American Werewolf in London" will finish Last Minute Production's horror series. The Wednesday shows will be presented at 8:00 pm, and "An American Werewolf In London" will be presented at 7:00 and 9:30 pm. The cost for the movies are $1.50 for WCU students, and $2.00 for all others. Alheville Chamber of Commerce News The Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce announces that Sandra Grant has joined the Chamber as Membership Services Manager. Grant is a native of the Asheville area and a graduate of Valley Springs High School in Skyland. She is an honors graduate from East Carolina University, with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She is currently working to complete a Masters degree in English from Western Carolina University. Prior to coming to the Asheville Chamber, Grant was an administrative Assistant for the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce. Grant is the author of several articles and essays in specialty magazines including North Carolina Folklore Journal and the American Poetry Anthology. In her new position, Grant will direct all Chamber membership development and programming including "Business After Hours" and other special events for Chamber members. Piano OPI — Pianist Constance Knox Carroll, artist in residence at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., will perform Thursday, Oct. 9, at Western Carolina University. Carroll's performance begins at 8 p.m. in the recital hall of WCU's Music-English Building. It is sponsored by the Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Series at WCU. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for non-WCU students and children, and $1 for WCU students.
