'<M\ 7206 or 7479 Thank You, Students Commentary by Donald Costello As I wandered through the quagmire of airplane bottles and plastic cups in the student section after Saturday's football game, I was reminded of the horrible things said regarding the interest level of the students. 'They all leave at halftime!" 'They're too drunk to care!" 'The football team always sucks, anyway!" My viewpoint from the press box and from the field painted a different picture of student interest, with the exception of the drunk part. But there was still a sense of caring. The Catamounts seemed ready to send the students home at half-time as Liberty rolled up a 17-0 lead. It seemed certain that the only way to prevent a mass exodus would be for Coach Bleil to insert Jim Beam at running back. Unfortunately, Mr. Beam does not appear on the roster. Instead, Western marched down the field like Sherman through Atlanta and put the ball in the end zone with two minutes remaining before the half. Was the touchdown enough to keep the competitive fermented glucose juices flowing? To my surprise, I emerged from the Hospitality Room at half-time to see most of the student body intact. Very few had left and those that did leave had extreme nausea or other prior commitments. Then, in the third quarter, as Western's offense came alive, so did the students. "Hooooooooooooooooooover," echoed through the valley when fullback Brad Hoover barreled through the Liberty defense for a 36-yard gain in the third quarter. And when the loving "bull excrement" chant bellowed through sections A and B at Whitmire Stadium and airplane bottles pelted the field following a Kenya Crooks catch that was ruled incomplete, I knew the students were there for the duration. How many times had they witnessed a comeback win by the Cats in recent years? The intensity level stayed high as the Cats mounted charge after charge into the bowels of the Liberty defense but were never able to punch the ball in the end zone. Even though the loss was depressing, it was one of those games where intoxication seemed to be justified. As a member of the press I am not allowed to drink before or during the game. So, following the press conference I went back to my squalor and started to sip the nectar. When I woke up with a hangover Sunday morning I wondered how things could get any worse. Then I thought, I could be a student at App State. All was well. Thank you, students.
