An unfortunate seeding position helped lead to a 7-4 loss to Mississippi State in a thrilling 11 inning game. This placed them in the losers bracket with No-1 seed and fifth ranked Texas. The game was anotherthrillcr, but Western lost 8-6. A little luck and better siding could have shown West- em make even greater strides. Baseball Co*ch Leggett stated, "Despite the losses and our personal disappointment, I think we gained a little more respect for our baseball program. I think everyone here recognized what we were up against and we came vilhin a key hitora big defensive play from pulling off a couple of big upsets." The Catamounts finished 38-24. This was the most wins in the team's history. There were other records: home runs (116), longest winning streak (11 games), and most doubles (119). The summer months will be spent replacing key people who helped in winning four straight Southern Conference Titles and four trips to the NCAA Tourmiment. S tar center fielder Skip Nellom accumulated career records for runs batted in (212), total bases (462), and is tied for the hom- erun lead at 47. He was a three-time All- Southern Conference selection and he was also named to the Atlantic Region All-Star team (first warn). The four Catamounts selected were third baseman Tom Malcheski, outfielder Skip Nelloms, catcher Dave Piela, and outfielder Keith LeClair. Malchesky, a junior, was selected in thel2th round and signed by the St. Louis Cardinals. He was assigned to the Cardinals minor league team in the New York-Penn League at Hamilton, Ontario. He batted .378 last season with 19 home runs, 12 doubles and 59 runs batted in. He was a first team All-Southern Conference selection and was named to the All-Atlantic Region team (second team). Nelloms, a senior, was drafted and signed by the New York Yankees and is playing in the New York-Penn League with Oneonta, New York. He was a three-time All-Southern Conference selection and was a first team pick on the All-Atlantic Region team. The Decatur, Georgia product holds the WCU career record for runs batted in (12), total bases (462) and owns a share of the career home run record (47). Peila, a junior from Mystic, Connecticut, was signed by the Atlanta Braves and sent to their Appalachian League team in Pulaski, Virginia. He batted .348 last season and threw out 25 base runners. LeClair was also inked by the Atlanta Braves and will play at Idaho Falls, Idaho in the Pioneer League this summer. The senior from Walpole, New Hampshire led the Catamounts in hitting with a .423 average witn 18 home runs, 15 doubles and 67 runs batted in. He led the nation in baseball hits with 101 safeties and was a first team All- Southern Conference selection. He was also the most valuable player in the Southern Conference Tournament last spring. WCU, which has won four consecutive Southern Conference championships, now has nine products in professional baseball, including two in major league baseball - Wayne Tolleson, an infielder with the New York Yankees, and Jerry Reed, a pitcher with the SeatUe Mariners. CAT GRIDDERS LOOKING TOWARD SEASON'S START The Catamounts' have not won a game since the stock market tumble of last year, but things are shaping up in a more optimistic pattern this year. The Cats had moved into the NCAA's Top 10 before a rast of injuries struck. This shows there is a strong nucleus of talent on the team. The injuries included 11 starters and second unit players who sustained season-ending injuries. There were also 18 reserve players who missed four or more of the last six games. Bob Waters mentioned several areas that as coach he felt would be needed for a successful year: returning healthy players to the team; linebackers to step in and fill losses created by graduation and injuries; the defensive secondary defensive line, and wide receiver areas must develop more depth. There will be improvements, both mentally and physically on the team. One last goal is a restoration of the confidence that was lost in the second half of last season. The 1988 schedule is also seen as an obstacle for the Cats. Waters stated, "Our schedule last year ranked the second toughest in l-AA football and next season's appears to be just as difficult." This year the Cats face North Carolina State and South Carolina, also l-AA playoff teams including Eastern Kentuckly, Marshall and Appalachian State. No problems are seen at the quarterback position. The tailback position has altered because David Mayfield (6-1, 185, senior) has moved to wide receiver. He missed last season due to a fractured wrist; although, he was a two-year starter previously. He has over 1,000 all-purpose yards and 23 touchdowns to his credit. David Mayfield LAKERS REPEAT AS CHAMPS by Charles Carpenter Game #7 oftheNBAchampionship series was played Tuesday night in the Los Angeles Forum. The home court was good to the Lakers bringing them a win and the NBA crown for the second year in a row. L.A. jumped out to an early lead, as they have done so many times before. Even though Isiah Thomas was playing with a badly sprained ankle, the Pistons fought back to take the lead. The game then began to see-saw back and forth, with one team spurting ahead then the other. The second period saw much of the same actions as the battle continued back and forth. Detroit lead at halftime 52-47. James Worthy lead all scorers with 20 of L.A.'s 47 in the half. At the beginning of the third period, the Lakers went on a 11-1 run, crashing the defensive boards and turning them into fastbreak points. The tension began to build when Bill Laimbeer of the Pistons hit Byron Scott of the Lakers. Midway through the third period, the Lakers were shooting 94% from the field. In the fourth period, the game changed. The Pistons went on a 15-4 run. But itjust wasn't enough. L.A. won 108-105. James Worthy, thecham- pionship series mvp, was the high man on the court with 36 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. This is the first time in 19 years a team has won back to back championships. This is the fifth championship the Lakers havein the 1980's. Further more it is the first they have won in seven games, out of five attempts. Cat Netters sign new recruits The basketball team is actively recruiting new talent in an effort to rebound from the past two disappointing seasons. Out new coach, Dave Possinger, seems to be using the same techniques that made him such a great success in his previous positions. He has b?en on the move and 1988 WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY Football Schedule DATE Sept. 3 Sept. 10 Sept. 17 Sept. 24 OPPONENT North Carolina State South Carolina #East Tennessee State Open SITE Raleigh, NC Columbia, SC Cullowhee TIME 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. Oct. 1 #The Citadel Cullowhee 7:00 p.m. Oct. 8 #Tennessee-Chattanooga Chattanooga, TN 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 North Carolina A&T Greensboro, NC 1:30 p.m. Oct. 22 ©Eastern Kentucky Cullowhee 2:00 p.m. Oct. 29 #Furman Greenville, SC 1:30 p.m. Nov. 5 #Appalachian State Boone, NC 1:30 p.m. Nov. 12 #Marshall(Parent's Day) Cullowhee 2:00 p.m. Nov. 19 #V.
