Sports Staff...Karen Ashe by Willie Dawkins Beginning this week, you will be introduced to the Sports staff 0 the Western Carolinian. These mtroducttons wtl. be made through a series of feature This week our featured person is Karen Ashe a junior social sctence major from Waynesville. No ,h Carolina Most individuals at Western know Karen as a sportswr.ter but the person behind the writer is interesting also. During her attendance at Pisgah High School Karen s plans were to attend East Carolina IILet , Greenvtlle, North Carolina. However. Karen received a scholarship to attend WCU, so she fulfilled the opportunity Western is "closer to home and 1 love the people here, admitted the junior social science major. I he campus cliche that says "Western seems to grow on you is a belief of Karen, too. She says that Western is alot more than she expected it to be, and if she had to start college over aga.n, Western would remain he, choice. The people that I ve met here have had good influences on me, satd Karen. "Knowing what 1 know now, I would definitely attend Western again." , Karen;s ,5'liati°n with WCU sports began in January of 1982. She was unsure as to whether she- wanted to write sports, but with a little coaxing from Russ Randolph, Carolinian Sports Editor, Karen began her journey as a sportswriter. "Russ was the driving force behind my decision," she generously allowed. Karen's first interview was with former WCU head baseball coach David Wright. Accompanying this initial interview were nervousness and lack of confidence, which so commonly surface. But as Karen's reporting experiences grew, so did her confidence. She began to cover track, gymnastics and swimming a year ago. Fast fall semester Karen covered Fady Cat volleyball, and according to head coach Tnsh Howell, apparently covered it well "Karen did a really good job in covering our volleyball season." said Howell. "She's a very punctual person and seems to be very conscientious." This year, as Fady Cat basketball made its curtsy, Karen had another sport to write about. And the basketball phrases are flowing smoother, due in all probability to the recent success of the team, under the tutelage of Judy Stroud. "I love writingsports,"saidanenthusiastic Karen. "1 Photo by Mark Haskett love meeting different people and I've learned alot about them." Karen spends her leisure going camping, hiking, and horseback-riding. These fulfilling hobbies are the result of growing up in the surrounding mountains. Upon graduation from WCU. the Waynesville native would like to attend graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Now you have met Karen Ashe, the name and the person that have become synonymous with Western Carolina University sports.
