  • 2 Western Carolinian/January 27, 1983 Senate Classified ad messages II by Kay Arrowood Insight Black Hole Sighted Dear Editor, The hole in front of the Music English building has got to be fixed. It is damaging cars, and endangering the lives of drivers who sometimes swerve at the last minute to miss it. 1 realize that several temporary patches have been placed over it. but !lV the end of the day it has collapsed back into the hole. This seems to reflect the university's policy that there is never time to do it right, but always time to do it over. 1 am sure that if there was a serious car accident or a flat on the chancellor's car, then the hole would be repaired. As for now, I recommend that one drive in the oncoming lane or detour through the Forsyth parking lot. If you are determined to travel this stretch of road, a four wheel drive would increase yout chances of survival. Name withheld by request The Student Senate of Western Carolina University began their first meeting of the new semester when President Charles Bonnell called the group to order at 5 p.m. on January 24, 1983. After the minutes were read and approved, the Senators answered roll call. Only one senator, Brett Lawson, was absent. The discussion of old business began with the second reading of Senate Resolution 978. SR 978 is "an act to amend SR 7I9."SR 719 was "an act to eliminate conflicts of interest in the Student Government Association" concerning members who served in two offices of the three branches of the Senate or who served in the Senate and another club or organization. SR 978 resolves to add the following two clauses to the first resolve of SR 719: a) "No individual may serve in more than one student body elected position concurrently; b)No individual may serve in the Senate while holding a compensized position in any organization." SR 978 further resolves that this resolution "take effect with the next regular elections" jj and "void any other act...in conflict with this act." $ The Committee on Rules, however, gave the resolution an unfavorable report. The sponsor of the ft | should be typewritten or clearly printed, and should contain a ; current phone number or mailing address. Call 586-6809/' Cullowhee Offering Escort Service S.Ci.A. is in the process of starting an escort service for all students attending W.C.U. Hopefully we will have this service underway before Spring Break of 1983. The service will involve only on-campus escorts. For example, if a person needs an escort to or from the library, we will provide a phone number that you can call and there will be escorts at a central location (ie. Student Government office). The service would run from Sunday night through Thursday night between the hours ol 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. A note to all student organizations ; this service will be on a trial basis. Sending out this letter to student organizations, S.G.A. is asking for males to volunteer toward this service. This does not mean that we don't need women escorts; all women who would like to be escorts feel free to sign up. All escorts will be heavily screened. Traffic and Security will be working with us by providing us with any help or assistance that would be needed. We are also trying to get some type of special recognition for all escorts. Year Book pictures, jackets, etc. If you have any questions or names of those who would like to volunteer, contact me. Pat Carmody, Director of Public Information or Terry Miller, Assistant Vice President at 227-7299 or 227-7405. Your help for this service would be greatly appreciated. New Speakers Available WCU now has a central speaker's bureau available to help match the demand for speakers with the resources of the university. The speakers bureau is coordinated through the WCU Division of Continuing Education and offers a 32- page guide listing some 69 faculty members and administrators who are available to address clubs and organizations. The guide, available through the Continuing Education office, provides both an alphabetical listing of speech topics and an alphabetical listing of speakers. Topics range from Africa, aging and development, alcohol, or art to money, volcanoes, women, or volunteerism.; To book a speaker or to add your name to the list, call Jim Ihlenfeld at the Division of Continuing Education, ext. 7397. made and seconded. After a brief discussion about the resolution. Senator Delk called for questions. When a division was called in the voice vote, the Senators voted again by roll call. Bonnell also announced the j; resignation of Senators Randy Vestal, Mark !| Bulfamoyer, and Dan Brown. In addition, he added that >', Kenn Port and Richard Torres'resignations as well as the switching of several assistants in the SGA must approved at the next meeting.
