  • Surles on sports t% WCU track By Steve Surles \ Western Carolina's baseball leam has surprised everyone by jumping out to a 3-1 league mark in the Southern Conference after the East Tennessee Slate game. The club was averaging .337 batting In the first three league games. Centcrfielder Willie Carpenter continues his assault on school batting records. Going into Wednesday's game with ASU, Willie was just eight base hits, seven runs batted in, and two home runs from tying Western Carolina baseball records.. . And how about freshman Greg Johnson's two home runs against Carson-Newman Monday? The Cats are loaded with freshmen and everyone of them can hit... Sophomore Randy Sims gave powerful East Tennessee State only 4 hits in TA innings Tuesday in the 6-2 loss. . Tough breaks never cease. . .the Cats lost, In the span of one week, all but one of their quarterback prospects in spring camp [Ronnie Mixon j. The coaches are hoping someone will recuperate in time for the spring game Thursday night. .. Quote of the week about the spring game: From Larry Pope of the "Asheville Citizen Times", who along with David Steele of WLOS-TV will serve as one of the honorary head coaches for the intrasquad game. Larry says before the player draft to determine the two teams, "If I don't get the team with Gerald Harp, the one healthy quarterback, and John Strong or Ricky Smith, I won't come o\er." Best thing I've seen lately was the tremendous comeback the women's softball team made at the Catamount Classic softball tourney lasl weekend. After losing the first game in the double-elimination event, the Lady Cats bounced back to win four straight games, including a 1-0 decision over a previously unbeaten East Carolina team. The Jackson County Rec department did a super job of organizing and putting on that tournament also. . . Speaking of doing well, Western's track and field team is off to a good start after a good winning performance in the Catamount Invitational Tuesday. Earlier the team ripped The Citadel 103-53 in Charleston. . . The voice of the Cats, WRGC's Joe Cornwell related to me the other day that he had been fortunate enough In his broadcast career to do high school basketball games featuring such talent as David Thompson, Tommy Burleson, Eric "Sleepy" Floyd and James Worthy.. .that's a lot of basketball talent... And speaking of basketball talent, women's coach Judy Murray has signed two of the better women's prospects in Western North Carolina in the past week. She inked Tuscola's Judy Green and Swain County's Anna Wike to athletic grant-in-aids and still hopes to recruit some more.. . Lady Cats take two more Western Carolina's streaking women's softball team, just off a fine showing in the Catamount Classic softball tournament, continued their winning ways with a doublehcader sweep over UNC-Charlotte 5-3 and 4-2. The two victories upped the Lady Cats record to 11 -5 on the season. The team travels to Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday (April 2) to take on the Lady Bears in a doubleheader scheduled for 2:00 p.m. WCU's track and field team, hosting the Tenth Annual Catamount Invitational meet, scored points in sixteen of seventeen events to run to a first place team finish in the event. The Cats outpointed runner-up, Brevard College 83 '/» to 60 to win the meet for the fifth time. Finishing in third place was last year's winner, Carson-Newman College with 53 points, with Milligan (19 points), Davidson (18), High Point (17), Presbyterian (14) and Furman (VA) rounding out the field. Western won five of the events and got a particularly good performance from Anthony James, who won the long and triple jumps. Also aiding the fine performance by the Cats were Eddie McGill, Jonathan Goines (400 meter) and the 440 and mile relay teams. "1 was very pleased with the team effort," says coach Paul Jones. "I think the difference was our depth—we just had a lot of players to get some points. We did well." The track Cats travel to the Davidson Relays tn Davidson, NC, Saturday, April 5 in their next action. Men's Tennis The men's tennis team concluded a busy week on the road losing five of six matches in the process. The Cats whipped Mars Hill 9-0 last Tuesday, but then lost a 6-3 decision to UNC-Asheville the next day. Following that was an 8-1 loss to VMI and 9-0 defeats to ETSU, UT-Chattanooga and VPI. Western, 1-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play, travels to Furman Wednesday for a Southern Conference match. WCU's women's tennis team had their share of problems also, dropping four matches in a row to lower their overall record to 3-4. The Lady Cats lost to UNC-Greensboro 8-1, UNC-Charlotte twice by 8-1 and 9-0 counts and Pfeiffer 9-0 Saturday. Sunday, the Lady Cats lost to Guilford College, 9-0, in a match at Cullowhee for the fifth straight defeat. The team had a chance to get back on the winning track April 2 when they travelled to Hickory, NC to take on the Lady Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College.
