McDaniel Editor-in-Chief Business Manager Managing Editor Associate Editor News Editor Sports Editor Columnist Art Editor Photo Editor Series on drugs a joint effort The Western Carolinian will begin a four part series on drug usage on the WCU campus beginning next week. Associate Editor Eddie Yandle, as well as the entire editorial staff and a number of staff writers, will be working on this project. In order for this series to be successful we will need your cooperation. A story will appear in next week's paper presenting an over-all generalization of the drug "culture" or "problem" on the WCU campus. This will highlight the types of drugs available, prices, accessibility and private confidential interviews with various students. With this first story will circulate a Carolinian Survey. It will be a random sample of student opinions, reactions, experiences, and will give us a better idea and evaluation of the drug situation on campus. This survey will be confidential, of course, and more information will be presented in next week's paper. The second part of the series will deal with actual drug related cases in WCU and Jackson County. We will focus on related differences in laws from state to state and a comparison of penalties in Jackson County and other North Carolina counties. We will try to incorporate student opinions of the laws in Jackson County and North Carolina as we expand on the second part of the series. The third part of the series will be highlighted by interviews with a State Bureau of Investigation agent, WCU campus security and county and city officials. We will also talk with a number of attorneys and others in the legal profession about our findings in the first two series. The final week will be a summary of the first three articles and the results of the survey. We will ask for student input and try to evaluate our findings with the national average and the average of other North Carolina Universities. We feel that this series will be of interest to the students of WCU and we urge your cooperation. If you receive a survey, please fill it out. All information will be kept confidential. We are conducting this series to better serve the interests of the students of WCU and to inform them, to the best of our knowledge, about details concerning the drug situation on campus. We feel the more informed you are with the situation, the better you can deal with it as you see fit. Boot People Taylor Sisk, News Editor for the Western Carolinian, will be in contact with all those persons who have expressed an interest in working with us in the Boat People effort. Sisk, the Carolinian, students and area residents who have shown interest will discuss the possible courses of action together in the near future. Thank you for your support. "I FORGOT TO BWNG /^V W(\M CUR Letters to the Editor UCBV on and on Dear Editor, I am writing this letter in response to Mr. Jim Riggins' letter to the editor that was published in last week's Western Carolinian. Yes, I agree that the controversy between the UCB and SGA or the WCU administration has not really benefited the students since most UCB planned entertainment has been disrupted. Being that the UCB does not exist, the UCB can not function and can not provide the UCB scheduled events. For the benefit of the students I hope that the new entertainment for the students is on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Fortunately, the UCB contracted some entertainment before the reorganization began. Because of these contracts, which are legally bound, the UCB movie. Superman, is scheduled to be shown this Friday night. As a former chairperson of the UCB I am pleased to know that the contracted events by the UCB will be provided for the students. I hope that the new entertainment board will sponsor Casino Night, the Tubing Race, the Funhouse for Halloween, and Discos which have been customary to have for the students of WCU. Concerned, Lavem Samuel Oxendine Frats thanked Dear Editor, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the sororities and fraternities listed below who assisted with the alumni phonothon last spring. Many of their members spend one or two evenings contacting alumni to ask for support of the university scholarship program. There students were eminently successful, raising over $3,700. In addition to the funds raised, they talked to over 1,000 alumni, many of whom had not been contacted by Western in a number of years. They talked about the university with enthusiasm and conviction, and were some of the best goodwill ambassadors we've had. They were a delightful group of students, polite, interested, and eager to help. I've not had the opportunity to work with a finer group of individuals than the members of: PhiMu Zeta Tau Alpha Alpha Xi Delta Delta Zeta Last year's effort was a well this program would Kappa Alpha Lambda Chi Alpha Alpha Kappa Psi Pi Kappa Alpha trial balloon" to see how succeed. Based on the excellent response and cooperation, we plan on continuing the student phonothon next spring and look forward to further assistance from student groups. Sincerely, D.R.
