  • Page 14 III! WESTERN CAROLINIAN October 11. Iir9 Sports WESTERN CAROLINIAN 1979-80 WCU basketball captains [left to right] Jimmy McCallister |#11], Harry Dolan |#34| and Forrest Callaway [#21] will try to lead "one of the youngest teams in the nation" to victory this year. Western Carolina finished fourth in the Southern Conference last season. Women's volley falls short The women's volleyball team suffered through a difficult week as they lost to Virginia Tech and UT-Chattanooga in the East Tennessee State volleyball tournament, and then split in a tri-match at Guilford College. The Lady Cats fell to the VPI Hokettes 12-15 and 5-15 and were then eliminated by UT-C 13-15 and 8-15. The team finished a disappointing 10th in the ten team tournament field in the Friday and Saturday play. Monday night the tearn rebounded somewhat as they lost to Guilford 9-15, 15-13, 15-7, 10-15. and 4-15 in tough matches. The Lady Cats salvaged the week by upending Catawba 15-8. 15-10 and 15-8. The Lady Cats have a 8-7 overall record (7-4 in nontournament play) going into Wednesday's tri-match in Breese Gym against East Tennessee State and Gardner-Webb. Cross country Repeat performance The cross country team, preparing for a very important meet at West Georgia College Saturday, turned in an impressive performance this weekend, shellacking UNC-Charlotte and Johnson C. Smith University by identical 15-50 scores in Charlotte. The Cats placed the top seven finishing positions and were led by freshman Sam Shirley's 26:34 time as he won his fourth consecutive race. The dual meet against West Georgia figures to be one of the toughest races the Catamounts will run this season. The team from Carrolton, Georgia has previously defeated a strong Georgia Tech club (this past weekend) and has run very strong and consistently all season. "This is definitely the best team we've run against this season.'' says coach Paul Jones. "This will test our club to the limit and they have several outstanding individuals who will really give us a test. We'll have to run our verv best iust to stay even with West Georgia, but the challenge will be a good one and will help our club prepare for the Conference championships." Saturday's meet will be in Carrolton, Georgia and will begin at 10 a.m. Basketball scrimmage slated for Monday Western Carolina's basketball fans have been waiting for several months for a look at Coach Steve Cottrell's four highly touted recruits in action. The anxious fans will gel their chance this Monday afternoon when Cottrell sends his '79-'80 squad through a full-scale scrimmage in the Catamounts' first preseason practice session. The scrimmage, which begins at 4:30 p.m.. will be a game-type affair with Southern Conference officials and is open to Ihe public. "We arc opening practice with a scrimmage for the sheer enjoyment of our players and fans," says Cottrell, who is beginning his third season as WCU's head basketball coach. "This will be the first time all 13 of our players have been on the floor together and that is an exciting thought for everyone." adds the Catamounts' ever-enthusiastic mentor, Western, which finished a surprising fourth in the Southern Conference championship race last winter, will open a 27-game schedule in Reid Gymnasium. November 30 against Maryville College in the first of four consecutive home games. Also on the card are games with Indiana State, last season's NCAA Championship finalist; Georgia Tech, the new ACC member; and 16 Southern Conference games. Cottrell labels his third edition "one of the youngest teams in the nation" as the squad's eight freshmen and sophomores are expected to dominate the playing time. However. Cottrell is not crying. "We have outstanding young talent and outstanding veteran leadership and will have the best depth we've had in three years." he notes. "We are going to be cautious about our optimism, but if our four new freshmen can contribute as much as last year's freshmen did, we'll be in good shape," explains Cottrell. The four rookies creating the stir around Reid Gymnasium are 6-3 prep All-America Ronnie Carr; 6-6 Georgia all-stater Kenny Trimier; versatile 6-5 West Virginia all-star Greg Young; and imposing Si Simmons, a 6-9, 220 pound Georgia all-stater. A solid contingent of starters return from last winter's 14-14 team that was rated the eighteenth most improved squad in the nation. Junior Larry Caldwell and sophomore Kevin Young shared the point guard duties last season and are expected to split playing time as the floor leader again this winter. 6-2 Greg Dennis, selected to the Southern Conference's All-Freshman team, returns at a wing position after an impressive rookie season in which he averaged 11.9 points and led the squad in field goal and free throw percentage. The only returning starter on the front line will be 6-7 sophomore Eric Taylor, who turned in several sparkling performances in his rookie season. He averaged 9.9 points and 7.9 rebounds. Cottrell is looking for leadership from three seniors-Forrest Callaway, a 6-4 wing; 6-3 wing Jimmy McCallister; and 6-9 Harry Dolan. Eric Yound, a 6-8 sophomore who saw action in 27 games last season, and two year letterman Clarence DesBordcs. a 6-6 forward, are the other returning lettermen. Cottrell will have to replace the 17.3 point average of explosive Raymond Person, an all-conference selection last season, and the rebounding prowess of rugged Terry Rutherford who averaged 8.6 caroms per game last season. "We have had back-to-back solid recruiting years, our system is becoming established and the enthusiasm for what we are trying to do is just tremendous." he emphasizes. Cottrell says he plans to work this team "harder and longer" than his two previous teams. "We have got to get ready for a very demanding pre-Christmas schedule," he explains. Citadel 'bark' not as bad as 'bite' The Citadel Bulldogs, using two third-quarter touchdowns from quarterback Tim Russell, held off a dramatic last second rally by Western Carolina, to pull out a 21-19 victory over the Catamounts in a Southern Conference football game in Charleston. South Carolina Saturday night. The Bulldogs were helped by several mistakes by the Catamount offensive unit. In the second quarter, the Citadel converted on an interception of a Mike Pusey pass to give them a 7-6 halftime lead. Then in the third quarter, a poor snap on a punt by Karl Witze gave the Citadel the ball on the Western 31, when the officials ruled that Witze's knee had touched the ground while fielding the snap. Tailback Stump Michell pushed a nine-yard run on third and eight to set up an 18-yard scamper by Russell to give TheCitadel a 14-6 lead. On the next Catamount possession, after a 51 yard kickoff return by James, quarterback Mike Pusey hit Gerlad Harp for a 37 yard scoring pass play. Attempting a two-point conversion Pusey was sacked by Bulldog defensive ends Mike Adams and Dale McLarty to keep the Cats behind 14-12. Russell again scored in the period with a nine-yard scamper. That capped an eight play 65 yard drive, the best Bulldog drive of the game, and made the score 21-12. Mitchell, who added 120 yards on 22 carries to the Citadel offense, nearly killed the drive with a fumble at nearlv midficld. The Catamounts recovered. with one official signalling the ball to Western However, the other official ruled no fumble and Bulldogs kept possession. Western came back to score again as Pusey hit Dwayne Norman for 45 yards and Leonard Williams with a 27 yard pass and run scoring play in the first seconds of the last quarter. Ted Dunn added the extra-point to make the score 21-19. After both teams traded punts, the Catamounts started their last drive from their own 31 with just 2:21 to go. The big plays were a 35 yard pass play to Harp and a 19 yard run by Williams that gave WCU a first down on the Citadel 14 with 1:30 left. Then another offensive mistake hurt the Catamounts as they were penalized 15 yards for holding on the play after Williams' run. The Cats then got the ball back to the 18 on fourth down with only 20 seconds to go. Dunn, who had earlier missed an extra point, and a 48 yard field goal attempt, in the tall, wet grass at Johnson-Hagood Stadium, came in to try a 35 yarder. His attempt was wide left to pcrserve the Bulldog win. I he Citadel upped their conference record to 2-0 with the victory. 3-2 overall. The Cats dropped to 1-2 in the league and 3-3 overall. Mike Pusey's 198 total vards gave him 4864 total yards in his career for the all-time Southern Conference record. Williams gave the Cats his third 100-plus vard game with 106 yards on 2.3 carries.
