  • January 17, 1980/THH WESTERN C AROLINIAN/Page 9 Test scores From Page 3 Assertions bv ETS that its tests measure "aptitude," "potential," "mental abilities," "analytical abilities," and other deep mental qualities are unsubstantiated by the facts. These claims are based on the tests' ability to predict first-year grades, but the Scholastic Aptitude Test [SAR|, according to information compiled from 827 different ETS studies from 1964-74, delivers an average accuracy in the prediction of first-year college grades of only 11.9%. The accuracy i of predictions with the LSAT |13%|, GRE[11%|, andi GMAT |8%| are about the same. Though ETS tests have very little relationship to future success, they have a systematic relationship to how much money a student's parents earn. College Board studies found that the relationship between SAT scores and family income holds in all regions of the country, and even within individual ethnic groups and individual schools. SAT scores discriminate not just between rich and poor, but between upper-class and middle-class, middle-class and working-class, and working-class and low-income. In short, the SAT discriminates at every step of the economic ladder. The evidence shows, however, that ranking based on other standards such as previous grades or previous accomplishments outside of the classroom have significantly less class bias. IChapter V| ETS is an immensely powerful force in American life that has seadfastly resisted inquiry for most of its 31-year history. As its President William 1 urn hull wrote in a confidential 1978 strategy memo, "We grew to be a large omnipresent organization..a powerful, little-known organization that many people had to deal with involuntarily in order to gain [or be denied) access to educational opportunities." [Chapter IX| "The more information that is released about ETS and its tests, the more widespread will be the understanding that standards and secrecy are incompatible with one another," said Nader. "Standards are supposed to accurately inform the buyer what to expect of the seller. It is only by withholding such information and deceiving the consumers of its tests that ETS perpetuated its hegemony."
