  • APRIL 19, 1979/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 5 sports WCU conference hopes fading by STEVE SURLES Sports Editor Western Carolina had its hopes for a Southern Conference baseball title blunted when the Davidson Wildcats came back to earn a split in the second game of a doubleheader at Davidson Tuesday afternoon. The Cats used the five-hit pitching from ace Rick Adair and the timely hitting of Wille Carpenter to take the opener, 4-0. Davidson came back to throttle three Cats pitchers for 10 hits to take a 7-2 decision in the nightcap. Western, with the split, has a 5-4 record in the conference, three games behind league leader The Citadel at 9-2. The Cats are 12-12 overall while Davidson is 2-8, 7-15. Western still has a slight chance at a title as all seven remaining games are within the conference. Adair, a left-handed junior, raised his record to 6-2 with his second shutout of the season. His ERA dropped to 1.73 with the win, as he allowed only two Wildcat batters to reach second base. He struck out six Heavy Easter sports schedule by STEVE SURLES Sports Editor Spring sports action was heavy over the Easter holidays as the various Catamount teams wind down their seasons and prepare for tournament action. The women's tennis team, the most successful at Western, upped their overall mark to 9-3 with a 9-0 victory over UNC-A. The win was the seventh in a row for the Lady Netters, coached by first year coach and former WCU player Patti Wilson. The team has an overall mark of 7-10 with only a Wednesday match at Mars Hill and a final home match against Carson-Newman Monday at 2 p.m. before the Southern Conference Tournament begins April 25-28 at Chattanooga. Don Dalton's golf team, now 6-3-1 in dual matches, will travel to Boone today for the ASU Invitational. The tournament will begin Thursday afternoon and conclude Friday. After that the golfers will close out their season at Maggie Valley Tuesday against VMI and ASU. The Southern Conference golf tournament begins April 30 and goes to May 2 at Pinehurst. The Cats used fourth inning RBI singles from Billy Boyd (Southern Conference leading hitter) and freshman second baseman Chet Greeson to pull ahead of Davidson. In the seventh WCU added insurance runs on Willie Carpenter's two-run double that scored David Ball and Freddy Brown. Western started the second game with a bang with Freddy Brown's fifth home run of the season, a two run shot that pulled him within two of the all-time Cats record of 15 set by Keith Ebersole in 77-78. However that was all the scoring Western could produce as Davidson tied the game off starter Jerry Warren in the first on a double by Cam Zurbruegg and an error. They went ahead to stay in the second inning 3-2, and salted the game away with four runs in the fifth on a walk and four consecutive singles. The Cats travel to East Tennessee State Thursday and play a double-header at Marshall the 21st. The last home game is scheduled for the 25th with East Tennessee State at 3 p.m. at Ronnie G. Childress Field.
