Center THREE-DAY SALE! April 18, 19, 20 opportunity for students to become more aware of their inner resources—psychological strengths—which make it possible to successfully complete a vigorous but rewarding endeavor. This has been shown to happen on the weekend backpacking outings offered as part of EDGC 150 during the fall and spring semesters. On these weekends, participants, some of whom had never before backpacked in the wilderness, found that they could successfully sustain a fifteen mile, mostly uphill bike with a 30 to 40 pound pack. The six-day summer outings will occur in the wilderness areas around Cashiers and in the Joyce-Kilmer Slick Rock Wilderness, and are open to those who have had wilderness camping experience, as well as to those who have not. The main activity will be backpacking and camping in a group of ten students and two instructors, along with instruction in wilderness skills, basic first aid, orienteering with maps and compass, and an overnight solo experience. In addition, group discussions along the way will initially focus on participants getting to know one another and then on how individuals are feeling about themselves and their reactions to the experience. Two EDGC 150 wilderness outings will be offered. The first will go from May 21 to 26, and is especially designed for students planning to take courses the first four-and-a-half week summer term, since the outing ends just before summer classes begin. The second outing will occur from July 28 to August 2, just after the end of the second four-and-a-half week summer term. The cost of $60 includes tuition for one credit hour, instruction, food, equipment and transportation from WCU to the wilderness site and back again. Participants will need to provide their own hiking boots, rain gear, and clothing. Registration for the first outing is handled by the Summer Sessions Office in Killian 108, and for the second outing by the Continuing Education Office in McKee 20. Interested students are invited to contact Bob Stremba, the course coordinator, in the CAP Center Counseling Office in Hoey, or phone 227-7469.
