For this reason, the nursing^ staff screens all patients for major symptoms. Also, nurses cannot diagnose illnesses and are not allowed to prescribe or dispense drugs. Consequently. Health Services has decided that the only way to offer good, quick medical care is to stock the shelves with medication that can normally be bought in a drugstore without a prescription. This way, says O'Neal, those patients with less serious symptoms can be directed by the nurse to select their own over-the-counter medication. The nurses are then released from any legal worries. O'Neal would like it to be better known that nothing has ever been proven to do anything for the common cold. He says. "The only thing that really helps is aspirin or Tylenol." Patients are seen at Graham Infirmary on a first come-first served basis. O'Neal notes that the only exceptions are treatments and dressing changes which take a minimal amount of the physician's time because the patient's problem was identified earlier. Another exception is when patients are returning for the results of laboratory and X-ray studies ordered earlier in the day. Dr. O'Neal admitted that waiting time at the infirmary as been extremely long this year. He attributes this to the retirement of Dr. H.A. Matthews in the fall and the present influenza outbreak. "Hopefully this problem will be relieved in April with the arrival of Dr. Richard Renner as full time Universitv Physician," said O'Neal.
