Donnie Reuss, Matt Gray and Turner Norris all finished in the top 11 to place second in the meet with 74 points. Appalachian State won the meet with 29 points. East Tennessee State's fourth place finish marked the first time in five years that ETSU did not win the men's championships. Seamus Powers won the eight kilometer event with a time of 25:19. Powers is the first runner to win the men's title for four straight years. Reuss finished fifth overall with a time of 26:04. Gray and Norris finished 10th and 11th with times of 26:41 and 26:46 respectively. Jack Murphy was 19th with a time of 27:26, and Keith Gunder was 29th in 27:41. Norris was named the Southern Conference Men's Freshman of the Year for his performance in the race. "It was an outstanding effort by our men's team," said Head Coach Danny Williamson. "Finishing second exceeded our expectations. This team has come a long way in the last two months." Roberts became the first Westerncross country runner (male or female) to finish second in the Conference meet. Her time in the five kilometer race was 18:40. Heather Vandebrake of Furman won the overall title in the women's race with a time of 18:13. The women's team finished fifth overall in the meet with 116 points. Furman won the overall title with 43 points, just 21 points ahead of Appalachian State. Second on the team for the Cats was Elizabeth Ransom, who finished 17th with a time of 19:50. After that the lady Cats came across the finish line in packs. Sarah Martin and Kim Lockman finished just two seconds apart as Martin placed 29th in 20:40 and Lockman was 30th in 20:42. Danielle O'Brien placed 42nd in 21:16 with Amy Gibson who was 43rd with a time of 21:17. "After Rita, Elizabeth Ransom and freshman Sarah Martin, we did not get the job done," said Williamson. "If our next two runners had performed like they were capable of, we would have finished at least third." Western's cross country teams will end their season November 13 in the NCAA District III meet in Greeneville, SC. The meet will include teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference. "It will be a chance for (our) women to show they are a better team than they showed in the conference meet and our men are capable of pulling off our best finish ever in the district meet," said Williamson. Media, coaches pick WCU 9th Derek Smolik Staff Reporter Both the media and the coaches picked Western Carolina to finish ninth in the conference at the recent Southern Conference Basketball Tip-Off in Asheville. In the coaches' poll the Cats received just one eighth place vote while eight of the other nine votes were for the Cats to finish ninth. UT-Chattanooga was picked to finish ahead of East Tennessee State in the poll with Marshall, Georgia Southern, Davidson, Furman, Appalachian State, The Citadel, WCU and VMI rounding out the top ten. In the media poll the Cats were once again picked to finish ninth as only four of the 28 votes were higher than ninth. The only difference between the two polls was that the media picked Appalachian to finish ahead of Furman, while the coaches had Furman well ahead of App. UT-Chattanooga senior guard/forward Gary Robb was picked as the coaches' player of the year in voting at the Tip-off. WCU's Frankie King, the highly-touted transfer player, was one of two other players to receive votes. The SC also announced its intentions to break the conference up into two divisions starting in the 1994-95 season. The new format will cut down on the number of conference games each team has to play. The teams will have to play twice against the teams in it's division and once against the teams in the other division. The division will more or less be north- em and southern with ASU, Davidson, ETSU, Marshall and VMI comprising the northern division and WCU UT-Chattanooga, GSU, Furman and The Citadel making up the other. The seedings for the conference tournament will still be determined by total conference record, not record within the divisions. 5 DAY DELIVERY!! t^24hrS "We are the leader in PRICE and SERVICE./^ • 1.2 MB Floppy Disc Drive • IDE I/O W/2S-1 P-1G Ports Omfli') • 1.44 MB Floppy Disc Drive • Local Bus (VIDEO) .. \.Wj/' • 1024x768 VESA SVGA, • 101 -Key Enhanced Keyboard ftiTfS { 2S6 COLOR • Pre installed MS Dos e.O 386sx40 486dx33 486dx66 2 MB Memory Exp to 16MB 106 MB Hard Drive 14" Color SVGA I Monitor 4 MB Memory Exp to 32 MB 210 MB Hard Drive Full Size Case 14" Color SVGA Nl Monitor • 8 MB Memory • Exp to 32 MB • 340 MB Hard Drive • Full Size Case 14" Color SVGA Nl Monitor MHwEEMm ^?rS 486 SLC 33 COLOR NOTEBOOK '4 MB RAM Expandable MB • 120 MB Hard Drive $2395 PRICES SUBJECT TO CHANGE Wr 1 - Year Warranty - LIFETIME TOLL FREE TECHNICAL SUPPORT Call for Option Package Prices - VISA.
