Leading 33-19 at the half, the Cats ran into foul trouble and hot shooting by the Bucs' Cat Watson and Vincent Scott, and with 11 minutes left went into their spread offense. The Cats withstood the Buc rally on the strength of their foul shooting, getting clutch free throws from Larry Caldwell and Kevin Young. Young hit four free throws in the last 20 seconds to seal the win. Western, using 2-3 and 1-3-1 zone defenses and great rebounding, dominated the first half of play. The Bucs were outrebounded 22-12 and forced into 16 turnovers by the aggressive Cats. The 14 point halftime lead was matched in the second half, 40-26, with 14:54 left to play. From then on the Bucs rallied to cut the lead down to five, 41-36 with 10:00 remaining.
