  • PAGE 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/ DECEMBER 7, 1978 sports Harp shares SC player-of-year honors 5 WCU players make All-SC by STEVE SURLES Sports Editor WCU's wide-receiver Gerald Harp and Furman quarterback David Henderson are the Southern Conference players of the year for 1978 in voting done Friday. Harp and Henderson each received 11 votes for the honor in balloting by the Southern Conference Sports Media Association and the league's head coaches. Harp, a 5'7" 152 pound sophomore from Red Oak, Ga. was the leading receiver in the conference with 62 catches. His 1145 yards and 11 TD receptions were WCU school records and he ranked third nationally with an average of 5.6 receptions a game. He also caught a 94 yard TD pass from QB Mike Pussey versus VMI to set a SC record, and his 169 receiving yards vs. VMI and three TD's against UTC equaled league highs for the season. Henderson led Furman to a share of the conference title while completing 112 of 187 passes for 1732 yards and 12 TD's. He missed a school record for total offense by only six yards, but set record tor TD passes. Both Harp and Henderson were selected to the 1978 All-southern Conference team, along with five other WCU players. The Cats placed seniors Robbie Vannoy (OG) and Ty Smith (nose guard) on the team with defensive backs Thomas Gunn and Willie Carpenter. Freshmen George Alston tied with ASU's Sami Killman at one of the defensive positions to become one of the first freshmen to win SC honors.
