Birmingham, and against Central Wesleyan, Western dominated play in the second half but could not score. The winning goal was scored when a pass on a Wesleyan throw-in accidentally touched a Western player and rolled into the goal. At Charlotte, the 49ers scored four goals in the game's first 15 minutes to put the Cats in a insurmountable hole. To all the problems, freshmen starter George Garth will be out of action for two weeks due to strained tendons in his knee-an injury he suffered in the Wesleyan game. Backpacking Class The Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department is now offering a four week Backpacking Class for any person 16 years of age or older. The class is scheduled to begin on Thursday, Oct. 2 and continue for four consecutive Thursdays. The class will be held at the Recreation Dept. offices located at Mark Watson Park and will begin Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The class will include a slide presentation, lectures from area experts on hiking, wildflower and tree identification, backpacking equipt., campfire building, and campfire cooking. The class will conclude with a two-day trip into Great Smoky Mtn. National Park on Oct. 25-26. The registration fee for the class is $10 per person. Cross-country Western Carolina's cross country team evened its record at 1-1 with a 25-32 win over the Citadel in a dual meet at Charleston, SC Saturday. The Cats overcame a new course record by Bulldog Freshman Chuck Gavin to place the three, four, live. six and seventh places in the meet. Gavin ran the five-mile course in a 26:ll) lime. Catamount Jeff Simpson came in third with a 26:45 run and was followed by Pat Mclaughlin and Dennis Francis who finished fourth and fifth respectively, at 26:58. Tom Mahon's sixth place time was 27:22 and Robert Murray, seventh, came in at 27:36. The Citadel dropped to 0-1 in dual meets this season with the loss. The next action for Western Carolina is Saturday, September 27 at Boone, NC, in a Southern Conference dual meet with Appalachian State. Horseshoe Tourney The Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department is sponsoring its third Horseshoe Tourney of the 1980 season. This two day event will be held on the newly- constructed pits at Mark Watson Park on September 29-30. Singles will be held on Monday, Sept. 29, and doubles will be held on Tuesday. Sept. 30. Divisions of competition are Juniors (under 18 years of age), Men and Women. This is a single-elimination tournament with each match being the best two out of three 21 point games. Entry fee for the tournament is $1 per person per event with plaques being awarded to the first place finishers in each division. Registration will be open until 6:00 p.m. each afternoon. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
