  • Page 9 Features February 10,1994 Western Carolinian RUSH's "Counterparts": VW 's, Rvves Dave Dave Williams Staff Reporter My friend Greg and I have been listening to this disc since it's been released because (a): We're both longtime Rush fans and (b): We can't figure out if we actually like it. Greg probably likes it a lot more because he went through the trouble to remember the song titles. With me it's like mis:IfIlikeit,it'sgreatandifnot/well...Irag on it. This is kinda sad because we both had great expectations for "Counterparts." True, Rush has gone back to more of the stripped-down sound last heard on their landmark album "Moving Pictures" (1981) instead of the heavy use of synthesizers which they first began on "Grace Under Pressure," but the whole thing still reeks of overproduction. Alex Lifeson's guitar solos have become more prominent than they nave on past albums, but mere's still this sticky studio gloss on them that prevents them from really taking off—and for a guitarist of Lifeson's ability, that's too bad because the guy can jam. The album opens up gangbusters with ''Arumate'',skminutesofProgressiveRock, sounding more like the old stuff: heavy guitar, good bass lines from Geddy Lee, Neil Peart's drumming quick and concise. "StickItOut,"theband'slatestsingle, comes on and you think you're listening to the logical extension of "Signals" (1982), but then, after you've whipped yourself into an air-guitar (or air-drums or air-bass) frenzy on "CutTo The Chase," youhearthisstrange politically-correct jello oozing out of your speakers. You look at the track listing. It's Track4:"Nobody'sHero."Thelyrics,about AIDS, are fine, and nobody's going to accuse Rush of being homophobic, but the tune comes pretty close to being Muzak that you hear while you're waiting in line at Burger King. "Between Sun and Moon" and "Alien Shore" sound like leftovers from "Grace Under Pressure" (1984) while "The Speed Of Love" could have been used as a bonus track for "Hold Your Fire" (1987). Things start picking up a little better on "Double Agent" with some interesting overdubbed vocal harmonies by bassist Geddy Lee and a tasty solo from Lifeson, but the real show-stopper is "Leave That Thing Alone," an instrumental sequel to "Where's My Thing?," from "Roll The Bones" (1991). This piece, composed by Lee and Lifeson, shows Rush in top form with Geddy Lee reminding us that he's still a top-notch bassist. The music shifts meters throughout, echoing other Rush masterpieces such as "YYZ" and "La Villa Strangliato," wherein these guys just throw caution to the wind and play. "Cold Fire" and "Everyday Glory," the last two tracks, find Rush still trying to write a Top 10 single, a pursuit that they should give up, because they're far too talented to waste their time with such a goal that it is better achieved in the hands of say, Madonna or Bonjovi. In a perfect world, Rush wouldn't have to stoop to such standards in order to get their songs heard and played on the radio. But, then again, who said this was a perfect world? In the end, after much listening and heated discussion, Greg and I threw up our hands and decided to give"Counterparts" three stars because, although there's some outright garbage as well as musical challenges on this disc, the former definitely encroaches upon one's pleasures in the latter. ** Welcome to a new feature ofWC.
