  • PAGE 10/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/NOVEMBER 18,1978 Animal House EAT YOU It wasn't exactly as elaborate as the movie "Animal House," but WCU did have its own "Deathmobile" and food fight in the cafeteria, and with it, a whole host of activities to celebrate Homecoming last week. The food fight seemed to be a strange way to kick off Homecoming Thursday but sources say dinner at Brown Cafeteria had never been the same. Later that night over 1,000 students converged on the Sylva National Guard Amory for a beer blast sponsored by Kappa Alpha fraternity and Budweiser. Despite the fact that only two kegs were tapped at a time, the 17 kegs were gone by 11 p.m. A moderate but enthusiastic crowd attended the pep rally Thursday night to officially begin the celebration of this year's Homecoming with the theme, "The Year of the Cat.'' Thursday was also the day voting took place for Homecoming Queen. The real celebration began Saturday morning with the Homecoming parade at 10:30 a.m. Five awards were given to WCU clubs and organizations, residence halls, fraternities and sororities. Zeta Tau Alpha won the sorority division in the parade, Pi Kappa Phi won the fraternity division, Helder won the residence hall award, Alpha Phi Omega won the award for the best entry by a club or organization and Leatherwood's "Deathmobile" (remarkable similar to the one in "Animal House") won the Chancellor's Award for the overall best float. The Cullowhee Volunteer Fire Department, the WCU band, the 1978 Homecoming Court and Miss North Carolina Debbie Shook also made their way across campus in the parade. At 11:30 the Cullowhee Cloggers and a disco dance team entertained alumni during a tailgate picnic between Belk Building and E.J. Whitmire Stadium. At 1 p.m. five paratroopers from Fort Campbell, KY dropped from 12,000 feet with the game ball, and the 1978 Homecoming game began. At halftime Lauren Kay McLendon of Titusville, Florida was crowned Homecoming Queen by Chancellor H.F. robinson. The Cats lost the game to Furman but will once again try for the Southern Conference Championship this week at home against Appalachian State. Homecoming ended with the dance Saturday night with music by "Point of View." When all the activities were over, most everyone agreed the 1978 Homecoming was one of the best.
