The^stern Carolinian The Voice of the Students 20 PAGES THURSDAY NOV. 16,1978 Vol.XLIVNo. 13 CULLOWHEE, NC ABC wises up; televises WCU vs. ASU Saturday by STEVE SURLES Sport* Editor ABC-TV announced Monday that they would broadcast the WCU-ASU game at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The TV coverage will be the first in WCU football history and is only the second for Appalachian State. (They played East Carolina on Regional ABC-TV Thanksgiving Day 1976.) Last week the network had planned to televise the WCU-Furman game but changed its programming at the last minute. The game will decide the Southern Conference championship. A victory by Western will assure them of their first title in only two years of competition. The game will also be the 43rd WCU-ASU game in the two schools' histories. Eleven stations, from six states can televise the game as part of ABC's regional Collegiate sports coverage, including Asheville's WLOS-TV. ABC will bring in a production crew of approximately 50 technicians, who will stay in Franklin and Waynesville. The camera crew will come from WTCG 17 from Atlanta, and Bob Murphy will handle the play-by play of the game. Preparations of Whitmire Stadium will be extensive with renovations to the press box and possible construction of special TV camera platforms. The revenue going to the Southern Conference from the game will be close to $420,000, with the seven Division 1-A teams and those eligible for the league championship dividing the sum. WCU's share has been estimated between $80,000-590,000. Western also has a possibility of gaining General Scholarships money if a WCU player wins the offensive or defensive player of the game awards. Western Carolina Sports Information Director Steve White says, "This game is a tremendous thing for the Athletic Department and the University in general. We can't put dollar signs on the exposure we'll get. We'll also benefit from it financially at a time when we need it. It really couldn't happen at a better time." Senate tackles crowded agenda by J.M. TRINKS Senate Reporter By a formal vote Monday night the Senate passed SR 751, an act changing the way in which students are selected for the Student Government Production Student Advisory Committee. In the past a representative was chosen at random from the student body by the computer center. President Wanda Nelson said she had talked with Robert W. Anders, the new head of the computer center,"and being new, he was completely disillusioned with the fact that we have to go in and use the computer center to select one student and we have to pay for computer time. I just thought it would be easier on us and we could be better facilitated if it was carried out through the Senate." (In an interview Wednesday, Robert Anders, computer center director, said he had not yet had a chance to meet with Ms. Nelson, and "I can't see as there would be any change for anything of this type (choosing a student on computer time)"). The new resolution now gives the president of SGA the power to select a student himself, subject to approval by the Rules Committee and the Student Senate. The Senate accepted the Alumni/Student Resources •Tom to Page IS, Please |OU«*£ I* 3 o £ i I .2 inside today Western's Catamounts will meet Appalachian State Saturday in the one for all the marbles. See page 6 for the complete game preview. WCU's Sid Cunningham will square off against his App twin brother Stan in Saturday's matchup. See page 12 for the tale of these two gridiron siblings. Lauren McLendon never won anything in her life, until Saturday. See the Homecoming Queen's story on Page 5. The tide comes in for Pablo Cruise in Cullowhee. See Chip Hammond's review of their fine performance last night on page 4. Touchdown! No beer yet deer in Sylva? Not yet. Much to the disappointment of all of you who thought you wouldn't have to make the haul to Waynesville for the weekend supplies, you'll have to do it one more time! The merchants of Sylva had high hopes of giving their customers what they wanted, when they wanted it, but it won't be until next week. Just as much as we had hoped to save time in quenching our thirsts, the local merchants had hoped to cash in on big orders expected from the Appalachian game, not to mention last night's concert. To insure that everyone has equal opportunity, the State ABC Board will issue all licenses on the same day, which is expected to be next Wednesday. Unfortunately this long-awaited date falls during our Thanksgiving break, so we'll just have to celebrate when we return. Isn't that a nice way to be welcomed home! In making your purchase, you may visit one of the following locations which have applied for their license: the A&P, Potts Brothers, Harold's Supermarket, Jerry Dills (across from the Parkway restaurant), Dan Stevens (beside the ABC store), Buddy Smith (Dillsboro, previously the Garden Supply Store), McNeely's Store, and The Grapevine. If there are any more locations, let us know.
