Page 8/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/FEBRUARY 2, 1978 Cats need a win! Cottrell says team has got to get going Western Carolina's Catamounts finish off their road trip this week at Carson-Newman and Appalachian St.iie and head coach Steve Cottrell is making one thing perfectly clear, the Cats need some wins. "We've got to get something going," said Cottrell this week as his team paused during a four-day break in the schedule with a 4-14 records and seven straight losses. "We need a win in the worst way," he said. Western faces Carson-Newman Thursday night in Johnson City, TN. and then travels to Boone for a Saturday night meeting with Southern conference leader Appalachian State. Then, on Monday. WCU begins a four-game home stand when Marshall brings its sizzling Thundering Herd to Cullowhee for the first time. WCU will remain al home lor another conference game with UT-Chat- tanooga on Saturday and then host Baptist College the following Monday and Appalachian State on Wednesday. Feb. 15. to close its Reid Gym action for the season. "We'll be the underdog in all of our last seven games." said Cottrell. "Bui then, that's nothing new to this team." Marshall, playing the hottest basketball in the Southern Conference currently, will arrive having just defeated league leader Appalachian in Boone and I -ill-man. The Herd is currently in second place in the conference. Chattanooga handed WCU an 84-73 defeat last Saturday on its home floor, dropping WCU to 2-6 in the conference. Western continues to be led by Bubba Wilson with a 2.i.3 scoring average that ranks third in the .Southern ■Conference. Wilson is also averaging 7.5 rebounds per game. Terry Rutherford is second in scoring with 11.1 points per game and is averaging 7.8 rebounds. Point guard Larry Caldwell has moved into the third spot with an 8.3 points per game average. Caldwell has scored 15. 18 and 16 points in his last three games. Both Caldwell and Rutherford are listed as doubtful however for both the Carson-Newman and Appalachian State games. Caldwell has a viral infection and Rutherford is suffering from a recurring inflammation of his leg muscles. Neither player was able to practice with the Cats this week. "Ihe truth is. we're just not deep enough to have vl, PRE-OWNED TREASURES -o LOCKSMITH SUNSHINE / ^ N^ FABRICS MOUNTAIN CRAFTS WILL SELL ON CONSIGNMENT 11AM1LLST. "We just haven't allowed our kids to get sick this season." he said with a smile, "but ii looks like that's catching up with us." Western will no doubt be cast in a spoiler role in its remaining four conference games. The two with Appalachian will be critical to the Mountaineers' hopes ot winning the regular season Southern title. The match-up with Marshall will also be a must win for the Bubba Wilson slams it through. WCU's game with UTC will be crucial in determining whick teams the two will have to face in the opening round of the conference tounament. opening on the home courts of the four top teams on Feb. 25. The first-round tourney format calls for the first place team to host the eighth place team, the second place team to host the seventh place team, and so on. Ski racing at Beech Mtn. The Southeastern Collegiate Ski Racing Association had its first meet of the season at Beech Mountain Ski Area last week. First place winner in the men's individual race was Gary Freeman from Clemson University; Greg Hampton from Lees McRae took second place while Oren Norris from ASU took third. Best men's team event was won by ASU. First place in women's individual competition was won by Cindv Ingram from Lees McRae; Gretchen Masters, ASU. took second: and Lisa Parrish, Clemson University, took third. Best women's team was won by Lees McRae. SCSRA meet director is Mark Gidncy, coach of Lees McRae ski team and part-time Beech Mountain ski instructor. "The courses." Gidney said, "are both open and closed gate and are much more technical than NASTAR and many other big national races. The SCSRA races are comprised of a 6-meet season with cumulative points for individuals and teams. At each race, three top women, three top men, and the top team for each competing school, are awarded medals. At the end of the season, according to point standings, trophies go to the winning individuals and teams. The meets this year are taking place at Beech, Sugar, Appalachian and Cattaloochee. The next SCSRA competition at Beech Mountain will take place on February 3rd. SCSRA membership includes Lees McRae (the only varsity team, and the only team to have gone to the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association Ski Championships in New England for the past two seasons); ASU; Clemson University; Wofford College; University of the South Sewanee, Tenn.; WCU; University of Tennessee at Knoxville; and ECU. Due to extreme weather conditions, only four schools were able to participate in this first meet of the season. The association was born back in 1974 when Jones Cottrell, now director of ski operations at Beech Mountain, helped to organize racing events specifically for college and university ski teams. The SCSRA. which began on a shoestring with only three schools, has slowly accumulated all the essentials for serious racing...slalom poles, timing equipment, flags and bib.
