The Cats will be at home again Thursday night at 7:30 against an undefeated Carson-Newman team. The Eagles are currently 4-0 with five returning starters and a front line thai features 6-8 and 6-9 players. Saturday Western will go on the road for the first time for a meeting with Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond. Va. Western, playLig in its season opener, trailed by two points at halftime, 34-32, but took advantage of its fast-breaking offense and pressing defense midway of the final half to roll to an 11 -point lead. Western opened the second half by tying the score quickly and then jockeyed with the Camels, like Western a first-year NCAA Divison I team, through the 13-minute mark when Campbell held a 41-40 lead after Robert Epps' free throw. But the Cats began to run at that point and scored then next 12 points as Person, a 6-5 junior transfer from Western Texas College, canned six straight points and teammate Terry Rutherford hit two straight 15-footers. straight 15-footers. The Camels, now 2-2, never got closer than 9 points the rest of the way. "The key was our fast break and defense that produced the opportunities," said Cottrell, the 33-year old former SMU assistant who replaced Fred Conley this summer in his first head coaching position. "We are happy with the win because of what it means to our program, and to a bunch of kids who didn't know what they would do together," said Cottrell. "This was actually the first varsity game for 12 of the 14 guys we had dressed." Person was the foremost of those players. He hit 13 of 24 field goal attempts and 5 of 9 foul shots, and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead that department. Other double-figure scorers for Western were sophomore Jimmy McCallister, who had 13 points, and Rutherford with a long-range 14 points. The best Campbell could offer was John Heckstall's 16 points from a forward spot. "We hustled, were aggressive and played with enthusiasm," said Cottrell, whose Cats were picked to finish eighth in the Southern Conference this season with only guard Bubba Wilson returning from last year's 8-16 team. "That style has got to be our trademark," continued Cottrell. DesBordes' stats weren't exceptional, but Cottrell credited him with shutting off Campbell's inside game and helping allow the Camels only 19 second-half m ^ LEWIS GREENE PHOTO DRAUGHT KEGS a ICE Phone 456-3240 Best prices 1 ISCOUMT 1 \(l \(-l STORE CAT'S FAVORITE SPOT ^IPj.
