  • PAGE 16/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/DECEMBER 1. 1977 'Illustrated' Disappointing Nt*t=^- Reading about one's accomplishments in a newspaper or magazine is always a treat. We at Western were so treated this week when the Nov. 28 issue of Sports Illustrated contained an article on the talents of Dan ell lipford and Wayne lolleson. The treat was soured a little however, with inaccurate descriptions of WCl1 students as being a bunch of odd people who all chew Red Man and Beechnut, and who •llv amuse themselves bv floating down the luckasee- , cc all day. (hewing, tubing and playing football aren't the onlv things we al Western do, but we now have that image in the minds of the readers of Sports Illustrated. It semis lhal an attempt was made to give WCU and Is students the appearance of backwoods boobs, and ulUiv.hcc as the cultural desert of North Carolina. In et, western North Carolina is rich in colorful history id ah nugh the area has its quaint appeal. Sports filustrati I did overdo it u bit. We'vi never beard wide use of the term "Hillbillx Bowl" either. Both ASI and WCU deserve more i espert than this. Christmas Spirit? De I ' ol X ihe t • for v ninule shopping, and Irving to find gift, During ihis period ol chaos, it is easy to forget what ( hrtstnias reallv means, li has become so commercialized that the true meaning of Christmas is lost. It is lost i:, the excessive ads for merchandise, in the thought •hat tin more you pay for a gift, the more it means to 1 remember one Christmas better than any other. My i imilv did not buy gifts that Christmas. All of the family tn< i al rn\ parent's house, and we all ate dinner together. There was a feeling oi togetherness and love i,ii no present could ever give. I found that it is not the one gives, but the feeling behind the giving of 'THE WORlp'5 RUNNING OUT Of PETROLEUM! VUimulAtt! ' even sharing the feeling of peace low aid all nimantty around the world. I his Christmas, why not stop for just a moment and think about the true meaning behind this holiday. Think aboul the Christ child that was horn almost two Miis.iml vears ago. His life was an example of sharing. 11 shared Ins love, his wisdom, and the greatest gift a - rson can give, his life. No other birth in the history of he world has affected as many lives as this one has. I Ins vear. try not to forget the reason for Christmas in the hectic rush for buying gifts. Remember what those gifts represent. Try to give something of yourself along with each gill. Tammy Hatchetl FRANKLY SPEAKING ... .try phil frank !
