Increasing fees necessary to provide new funds Committee submits parking status report A special committee appointed last January by Chancellor Robinson has presented a status report on its work to the Faculty Senate. The report, presented Tuesday by Dr. C. Joseph Carter, vice chancellor for business affairs, calls for the establishment of two zones for faculty and staff parking, with registration fees varying according to the proximity of the parking area to major buildings. Close-in parking would carry a fee of $20 per vehicle, while parking further away would rate a $12-per-vehicle charge, Carter said. The parking registration fee for students would be a flat $12 per vehicle, according to the report. Increasing the cost of parking is necessary to provide funds for creating, improving, and maintaining on- campus parking areas, and providing security for them, Dr. Carter said. Parking fees and fines are the only sources of funds for these purposes, he said, since in North Carolina state appropriated funds may not be used for campus parking projects. The report included what Dr. Carter called "tentative recommendations" for expanding the parking areas on campus during the next two to three years. Short-range improvements include enlarging the lot behind the Baptist church to provide space for about 180 ^. additional cars and paving or repaying most of the lower ■ portion of the lot. The upper sections would be gravelled. The present parking area in old Memorial Stadium would be paved, and an additional area large enough to accommodate 100 additional vehicles would be graded and gravelled. The construction of a 230-vehicle parking lot adjacent to the new administration building and Mountain Heritage Center also will help relieve the existing shortage of parking spaces, Dr. Carter said. Dr. Carter also took note of parking improvements completed during spring break — paving of warehouse road, an additional section of the fieldhouse lot, and Hoey Meeting Monday There will be an Executive Committee meeting Monday night at 8:30 p.m. Any member of the committee unable to attend this meeting must have a written excuse to be presented to the committee for approval. In the event of no quorum, the meeting will be rescheduled for Wednesday. Plaza. The committee's work is still in progress, Dr. Carter said, and the recommendations adopted to date are expected to be included in a final report to Chancellor Robinson before the June 2 meeting of the board of trustees. Dr. Robinson spoke of the importance of the committee's study. "This kind of basic planning for the future is extremely important to Western Carolina University," he said. "I want to express my appreciation to Dr. Thomas and Mr. MacDonell and the parking committee for the work they have already done and the work they will continue to do to improve the parking situation for all members of the campus community " The special committee is chaired by Dr Pelham Thomas, professor of mathematics. HughW. MacDonell, director of fiscal affairs, has served as coordinator for the group Pure fun! River formidable foe for canoers The longest single-day whitewater canoe race in the Southeast—the North Carolina C-2 Championship—will be Saturday on the Tuckasegee River. The 25-mile race, according to coordinator Roger Roundtree, will attract some of the top whitewater and marathon paddlers in the Southeast. The race will begin at 11 a.m. in the community of Tuckasegee at the confluence of the East and West forks of the river. The finish line is the Barker's Creek Bridge in the community of Whittier. River maps will be posted at the starting point. "The upper 20 miles of the race are characterized by Class I and II rapids and long stretches of flatwater which the downriver paddlers will like." Roundtree explained. "bui the last five miles are characterized by several tough Class III rapids which will help the whitewater Two portages will be necessary—around the dams in Cullowhee and Dillsboro. Control gates will be placed over some of the Class II and III rapids. There will be five tandem canoe classes. For cruising canoes there will be a men's open, mixed, women's, and men's intercollegiate class. For downriver canoes there The race is sponsored by the UCB, the Jackson County- Recreation Department, and Cullowhcc Wilderness Outfitters. Trophies for the first three places will be presented to the bow and sternmen in each class. Registration fees are $6.50 until registration closes 30 minutes before the race begins.
