Page 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Tuesday, January 24, 1967 CAROLINIAN SPORTS SECTION Logan And Wittman Lead Catamount Stats So Far CULLOWHEE . . . Henry Logan and Greg Wittman have teamed up to lead WCC in virtually every statistical category. Logan, WCC's All American eager, leads the squad-as well as the Carolinas Conference in scoring with a 32.4 average. The Asheville ace also has the most assists - 73 - and the best percentage from the foul line, 69.1%. 6*8* Wittman, a Rockingham sophomore, is the Cats top re- bounder with 12.0 per game and is the most accurate shooter from the floor with a 52.0%. The agile pivotman also has a 16.2 scoring average. Wittman has scored over 20 points in the last five games and has averaged 22.8 in those contests. Despite the impressive statistics of Logan and Wittman, Western shows a disappointing 6-10 record. The Cats lost their seventh straight road game in Greenville, S.C. last Saturday to the Newberry Indians. No relief is in sight as the Cats are on the road again this weekend, playing Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, Friday night and Atlantic Christian in Wilson, Saturday evening. Western, hampered by injuries to key personnel all season, welcomed Captain Bob Thompson back to practice last week but the 6'5" rebounder is not expected to see action anytime soon. Reserve guard, Mai Brown, continues to be sidelined with a thigh injury. MORE INTRAMURALS, Page 7 Wittman, Logon Star As Western Fails Ii Game's Last Seconds Western Carolina lost athril- ler last Saturday night to the Newberry Indians at Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, S.C., by a score of 77-69. In the first half, the Indians opened up an early lead and the Cats were forced to play catch up ball. BUI Murphy, who led the Indians throughout the game, was their big gun as he was able to work effectively against the Catamount defense. He wound up with 20 points for the night, most of them coming in the first half. Western trailed at the half after Logan was having difficulties getting back into his old form after a three-game layoff. The halftime score was 42-35, Newberry. The Cats came roaring back in the second period as Henry led the Cats to a single-point lead with 9:35 remaining. The lead changed hands several times with Western leading by as much as three points at 56-53. Then Newberry started capitalizing on some superb foul shooting, overcoming the Cat lead and going on the lead by as much as five points. The Catamounts were not to be held down long, however, and true to the style of the already exciting game, they staged another comeback. With Wittman and Logan leading the way, they closed the gap to two points with 47 seconds remaining. At that point, Newberry's Tommy Martin was fouled as Western tried to get ball control. He hit both his shots and Western hopes were becoming dim. Then Buddy Moore hit four more charity tosses and the Indians were out of reach. Wittman led the scoring for Western with26points, followed by Logan with 20. The only other Catamount in double figures was Randy Turbyfill with 11. Western made 31 of 70 from the floor for 41 percent; Newberry also hit 41 percent from the floor with 27 of 63. The foul shooting clearly made the difference for the Indians; they hit 23 of 32 from the charity line as Western connected on seven of 13. W.
