  • Sports Page 14 September 9,1993 Western Carolinian Cat's football team ready to roar this year Derek Smolik StaffReporter Western Carolina University's football team, the pre-season favorite to win the conference title? "A dream," you say. "Maybe a hallucination?" No, it's for real, and it means that the Cats have a legitimate shot at the I-A A National Championship for the first time since Bob Waters was head coach. Western was picked number one by Sports Illustrated in their season poll. The last time S.l. picked the Cats to finish at the top was in 1984, and Western finished the season with an 8-3 record and 14th in the final poll. Head Coach Steve Hodgin tried to keep the high expectations in perspective by saying, "It's just a game...we just want to represent our university." The Cats return 18 of 22 starters from last year's 7-4 team that just missed the play-offs, included in that group is preseason Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year Lonnie Galloway. Also coming back for the Cats will be All-Conference wide receivers Craig Aiken and Kerry Hayes. Galloway's two favorite targets combined for 84 receptions, 1838 yards, and 14 touchdowns. The running game also remains strong with tailback Kevin Thigpen returning to lead the attack. He also became the first Cat since 1977 to top the 1,000 yard mark. Hodgin's one concern is the offensive line. All-Conference linemen Thomas Jackson and Wes Greenwell return, but the other three positions are uncertain. "We've still got some questions, need a couple of games to see how things will work out," Hodgin said. Special teams should be in good shape with pre-season All-Conference picks Phil Shirley (place kicker), Kenny Pauley (punter) and Kerry Hayes (kick-off/ punt returns) all returning for this season. The defense should be strong once again this year as the Cats welcome back eight of 11 starters. Two-time All-Conference pick Tony Johnson returns to lead the defensive line. JimTully and Billy Bumper are back at the tackle spots. Western lost both outside linebackers from last year, but inside backers Tom Bodine and Robbie Brown are back. The loss of Willie Williams to the NFL is tough, but Julius Grant and Stanley Morrow were All-Conference picks and return along with Jay Brathwaite. The biggest challenge to the team may not come on the field, but in their heads. Lookahead or take anyone too lightly in this conference and you're going to get your butt kicked. The Rest of the Conference Marshall: A team that relied on it's ability to score last year will have to rely on it's ability to stop teams from scoring this year. The Herd lost four All-Americans from last year's offense that averaged 40 points a game. They return six starters from a defense that allowed less than 20 points a game. Georgia Southern: The first year in the league for this team should be a good one. A tough defense that allowed less than 14 points a game returns eight starters and should be very strong once again. Charles Bostick and Joe Dupree are fighting it out for the quarterback spot in the preseason. Furman: The Paladins were also hit hard by graduation on offense. Carl Tremble, the conference's all-time leading rusher, is gone, as is the majority of the offensive line. Furman defense lost most of it's secondary, but is solid at linebacker and on the line. Appalachian State: Boone's goons ended the Cats' season last year and took away a play-off spot. But a repeat performance is unlikely this year as the Mountaineers lost seven starters on offense. App isn't likely to do more than beat the teams below them, but could always have a few surprises, ask the Cats. Citadel: The "Dog-bone," as their running attack is sometimes called, was hit hard by graduation. Gone is scrambling quarterback Jack Douglas and his entire offensive line - ouch. Defense is a little more solid with seven players returning, but it may take a shut-Out by the defense to win a game. East Tennessee State: The Bucs showed some signs of life for the first time since 1986 and slid their way up to sixth place. A repeat performance could be likely with 17 returning starters for the Bucs. On defense the secondary returns three of four starters, but both the line and linebackers have holes to fill. UT-Chattanooga: Chattanooga brings a new coach and a nine game losing streak into the 93 campaign. The Mocs lost ten starters from last year's team including three offensive linemen and three linebackers. Chattanooga does return the two stars from it's offense last year in quarterback Kenyon Earl and tailback Jerry Ellison who accounted for almost 60% of the Mocs total offense. The problem for the Mocs could be outscoring their opponents as the defense has many questions. VMI: PoorVMI. As if things weren't bad enough for them last year (3-8 overall, 1-6 in conference), they lost their all-time total yardage leader and quarterback Tony Scales. The defense was not hit as hard but is young (only three senior starters) and may have problems.
