  • Page 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN ^^^ ^^ TUESDAY MAY 6, 1975 Planning The Smoky Mountain regional development forum held here last week proved successful if for no other reason than that issues on land use planning were openly discussed. Polarization of pro and con forces is usually evident at similar meetings, but the one here proceeded in a mannerly fashion and actual results may have been achieved. Environmentalists have long suffered and done too little to destroy the image painted of them as people determined to fight all growth and development. That shouldn't be their goal, and it isn't for those who understand the problems of both the environment and mankind. Instead, they should seek an ordered growth plan that prevents the haphazard, let- grow-what-may attitude. Despite its dangers, flood plains have been a prime target for development in the mountains, and flash-flooding has often demonstrated its potential problems. Developers and construction magnates feel threatened by land use planning advocates because it means they might be forced to spend more in their buildings and have to justify their expansion. However, the final product will be a more structured habitat with less danger of massive losses from floods and sightless strips of hamburger joints and service stations intermingled with expensive housing projects. Cleaning-up Saturday a group of university maintenance men went about campus pulling down old signs which asked students to vote in last week's elections. Rain prevented the crew members from getting all of them, but we feel that they shouldn't have had to do it at all. That should be the responsibility of the student- politicians that have decorated the campus for the past two weeks. The maintenance people command our respect for the work they do cleaning up others' thoughtless litter, but this is one instance where the students should be required to pull their own signs down from those hard-to-get-to walls. The final run-offs will be held Thursday, and we would like to see all "Vote for Me" posters down the next day. Campaigns that were decided last week are still being advertised despite the rain-smeared paint on the posters. We want them taken down — not by the maintenance people, but by those who put them up. Letters Candidate request support As a candidate for the University Center Board President, I would like to thank everyone for their support in last Tuesday's election. The University Center strives to serve its students, faculty, and guests here at Western Carolina University. The University Center is not just a building, it is a program and organization that represents a well considered plan for the conveniences, and the amenities of getting to know and understand one another through informal association outside the classroom. I feel that the University Center Board is a part of the educational program of this school. Through the Board and its committees, I helped in providing a cultural, social, and recreational programing aimed at making activities in coordination with the educational process. In the past I have worked at achieving the above objectives in coordinatingand assisting in such events as the: Halloween Fun House, Tubing Races, World Record Banana Split, U.C.B. Dances, Coffeehouses, etc., just to mention a few. Also, in this third year of my involvement with the U.C.B., I have served on the executive committee as Vice President. I feel that three years on the University Center Board provides me with the much needed experience required for this job. I would deeply appreciate your support in this Thursday 's election. Sincerely, Rick Myers Know your legal rights With the growing disrespect and lack of concern for the legal rights of students, the office of legal assistance is distributing a wallet sized card entitled ''Know Your Rights When Stopped, Arrested, or Searched by the Police." These cards from the North Carolina Civil Liberties Union will be placed on the informal tion desk in fromt of the Student (Jovernment association office, second floor, University- Center. A referral service for those in need of legal assistance is also available. Sam K.
