'age 8 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN TUESDAY MAY 6, 1975 Tfe VlMTTEI^I OlJ^iLAlMlAl C PORTS Southern Conference Conference fails to vote again. .—. Waters setback but hopeful For the second time in less than six months, the Southern Conference has chosen not to vote on Western Carolina University's membership application. The conference decided at its spring meeting in Boone, May 1-2, to table WCl's application for membership ''for not more than one year" and appointed a special committee to "examine the philosophy of the conference, the possibility of expansion, and procedur al policy relative to expansion and other matters." Bob Waters, WCl's athletic director and head football coach, said he was "dis^ appointed" at the lack of action, "but at the same time we are sympathetic with the decision of the conference to solve its internal problems before it brings in another school." The next business meeting for the Southern Conference is scheduled for December with Davidson College acting as the host. Where does this latest action, or inaction, by the conference leave Western Carolina University'.' "We do not plan to withdraw our application for membership at this time, nor do we plan to spend any more time actively pursuing Southern Conference membership until the conference inaKes a decision on its own direction," stated Waters. WCU has actively sought Southern Conference membership for almost three years Runners blasts Gardner-Webb in season's last dual meet WCU's track and field team made its last dual meet of the season a successful outing with a 101-39 blasting of Gardner" Webb College inBoilingSprings last Saturday. Those committees, along with the league commissioner, returned favorable reports to the conference, regarding WCU's acceptability for membership. Waters said that he did not think a weakness at WCU was a major problem in its acceptance, but rather "our sti ength in certain areas might be hurting our bid." "We realize the many advantages on major conference affiliation, but we will not be destroyed if we are not accepted for membership in the immediate future," he added. Waters say WCU will continue to strengthen its existing program and compete as an NCAA Division 11 independent at least through the upcoming academic year- "We have attractive schedules for most of our teams for next year and several outstanding Division 1 and 11 teams are committed to play us in the future seasons," Waters revealed. He further stated that regardless of what happens with the Southern Conference, WCU will continue its rivalries with several opponents and hopes to develop traditional relations with several more schools. WCU takes win over Georgia, 6-5 Western Carolina University's baseball team came from behind three times Sunday afternoon at Haywood Field to edge out the University of Georgia's squad, 6-5, The win sent WCU's record to 14-7 and left Georgia, the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division champion, with a 20-12 record. The Catamounts will com- plete their home schedule this week by hosting Furman, Wednesday, and Virginia Tech,Saturday and Sunday. Danny Carswell's double in the ninth inning sent home Dale Fox from first base with the w inning run that climaxed Western's come-from-behind victory over the Bulldogs. Jerry Ramsey, who relieved Reed in the eighth, picked up his third win of the season, all in relief. Unique double-header set at Asheville May 12 Collegiate and professional baseball, two distinct levels of competition within the great American pastime, will get together for a unique double- header May 12 at Asheville's McCormick Field in what should prove to be an interesting evening of baseball. WCU, featuring several former area prep stars, will be making its first appearance in Asheville in nearly twenty years. Coach Bill Haywood's Catamounts are in the midst of an outstanding season and could enhance their chances for a post-season playoff berth with an impressive showing. South Carolina, coached by former New York Yankee great Bobby Richardson, has won 39 of its 43 games this season and is lead by a pair of All America performers - pitcher Earl Bass (12-0;1.01 ERA) and first baseman Hank Small (.407 avg.; 15 home runs).
