Men's head coach Blatt resigns Derek Smolik Sports Editor Greg B latt, the WCU men' s basketball head coach, announced his resignation on Tuesday, after weeks of speculation regarding his return next season. Blatt, who was in his fourth season at Western, announced that he will stay on to coach the team for it's last seven games and the Southern Conference Tournament. Blatt has a 35-68 record during his time at Western. Before coming to Western, he was the head coach at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, where he had an 89-35 record. "With the best interests of my players and Western Carolina University in mind, I announce my resignation as head basketball coach, effective at the end of this season," said Blatt. "I hope this announcement will put an end to undue pressures and rumors, and thereby enable our team to concentrate on its remaining games. With six of our seven at home and the conference tournament ahead of us, there remains much we can accomplish. This announcement should also allow Western Carolina to lay groundwork for selecting its new coach immediately following the season." Athletic Director Larry Travis, who is in his first year at WCU, said that he has not had time to set a timetable for hiring a new head coach. "I am sincerely sorry it didn't work out for Greg. He is a fine person and I wish him the best in whatever he chooses to do," Travis said. In 1991, Blatt's second season, he led the team out of the cellar for the first time in four years. The following season, he led the team to its best conference finish since 1986, with a 5-9 record and fifth place finish. "Coming into the season, I felt we had made some progress with our basketball program," Blatt said. "Western had finished last in the Southern Conference the two years prior to my arrival, and we were able to move from OPl photo by Mark Harkett Men's Basketball Head Coach Greg Blatt discusses strategy with Terry Boyd during the 1991-92 Catamount basketball season. eighth to fifth in successive years. However, this year that he was pleased with their academic performance. our program has regressed and, as head basketball coach, I bear that responsibility. Western's students and fans deserve a winner. I am sorry that we hadn't been able to provide them with that" Despite the Cats' record this season, Blatt said "However, I am proud that in the area of academics, there has been substantial progress. Two local bands, Disco Enchantment Orchestra and Jupiter's Eye, will play for the grand opening. According toco-owners Robert Miller and John Primm, the delay is due to their decision to include a kitchen in order to expand the business. "We chose to expand and put in a kitchen, so that we would have a more well-rounded type of atmosphere," said Miller, who is also a graduate student at WCU. Bailey's will be open Tuesday through Saturday 11 am to 3 pm for lunch, and between 5 pm and 8 pm for dinner. Appetizers will also be served from 8 pm until midnight. Bailey's will remain open until 2:30 am. Although it is not necessary to be a member to get in, memberships for one year are only $10, and members will be able to get in free until the end of February. After February, those with memberships will be charged a lower cover than those without memberships. This Friday night, Bailey's will hostCornbread with The Stand-ins. On Saturday night, House of Usher will be playing. What brings Bailey's to Sylva? "We saw that there's a lot of people that need something to do (in Cullowhee), and decided to open a place for them to go," Miller said. SCA seeks interns for resource assistant positions Blake Frizzell Staff Writer The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is currently looking for dedicated volunteer interns who wish to make a difference.
