  • THURSDAY APRIL 10, 1975 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Pnpf 5 cr Candidates give platforms FROM PAGE 2 Digges blamed the failure of the student courts on not having enough judges, and on the student senate, which must approve the judges. As far as other internal problems, Digges admitted "We don't have all the answers," But he said, "there's no sense in staying up here in the mountains and getting behind times," looking at other schools will help solve some of our problems. Steve Sherman, a sophomore student senator and chairman of the senate's clubs and organizations committee, said it is SGA's job to protect student's rights, fulfill their needs, and represent their feelings. If elected vice president, Sherman said he would be in a unique position to carry out those functions, as a member of both the legislative and executive branches of SGA., Sherman said he wanted to see an appeals process established so students can challenge the fines levied on them by the university. He also promised to assist off-campus students with landlord problems, "Burce Wike is only one example of landlords who are not meeting state health and safety standards," he said, Sherman stated he would cut SGA salaries 25 per cent: ""We're here to serve the students, not to make money." He said campus security needs drastic imrovement, "from the top down." Sherman singled out Russ Stevens and student housing as the number one problem residence hall students face. He termed recent housing actions as "arbitrary and unfair." Doug Smith, also a newcomer to SGA politics, said as vice president he would publish all proposed senate bills in the campus newspaper, along Smith called mandatory meal tickets "unfair" and charged that the university issues more parking stickers than spaces with a section that allowed students to check whether they favor the bill or not. Students could then turn in their "ballot" to SGA. available. "The university owns enough land that I feel they could build enough parking spaces," he said, "The students voices aren't being heard," said Smith. The people in student governnunf in ine past ha vent represented the students he said, which is why "I don't feel not holding any previous SGA positions is a mark against me." Smith said he would continue to view hall governments as "themainkey" in representing students. SGA should not attempt to run dorm governments, but should work with them he said. SGA elections are next Tuesday, April 15, in front of the University Center. ar mr 3E MMrnglff Mddness, Slow-talking, fast-walking Bill Mclntyre nearly stole the show last night at the Miss Catamount with his antics on the bass fiddle, (Photo by Rick Rose,) AAAIVVVVWIWWWyWVSAAA Are all those paperback books you've had to buy for classes stacking up around your ears?
