The Consort, under the direction of saxophonist Paul Winter, combines elements of rock, jazz, and classical music in an attempt to bridge the gap, in Winter's words, "between the academic traditions and free form." The sextet wonfirstprize in the 1961 Intercollegiate Jazz Festival in Washington, went on a 23-country State Department tour of Latin America, and, at the invitation of President Kennedy, presented the first jazz concert in history of the White House in November, 1962. By 1967 the group had become the Consort, touring universities around the country and playing major concerts at places like Carnegie Hall and the 1971 Music Educators National Conference in Atlantic City. The Consort's recordings include "The Winter Consort," "Something In The Wind," "Road," and "Icarus." The performance is sponsored by the WCU Lectures, Concerts, and Exhibitions Committee. Admission is free to WCU students and LCE subscription series members.but special admission tickets must oe picked up in advance. Student tickets are available from the information desk at the University Center. If space permits, the public may purchase tickets at the door at $3 for adults and $1.50 for children. Regional craftsmen to exhibit The WCU department of art has invited many outstanding craftsmen of the Western North Carolina region to participate in the 1975 Regional Craftsmen Exhibition. The exhibit will open with a reception in the Art Gallery in the Belk Building on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Regional Craftsmen Exhibition is an annual event which brings the work of different craftsmen to the WCU campus each year. The exhibit will include among other such diverse crafts as quilts, baskets, pottery, jewelry, weaving, stonecarving, and woodcarving. A special feature of the exhibit will include the stone- carvings of Lloyd Owle of Cherokee. The exhibit will open with a public reception for the craftsmen. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
