GUY BURCHFIELD Burchfield Named Director Of Western's Teacher Corps Dr. Guy Burchfield has been named director of the Western Carolina University Teacher Corps project operating throughout Western North Carolina, it was announced today by Dr. Taft B. Botner, dean of the WCU School of Education and Psychology. He will succeed the late Dr. Stanton H. Procter. Appointment of Burchfield, widely-known educational consultant, to direct the project- one of the largest in the United States and the only Teacher Crops unit in North Carolina- has been approved by Richard A Graham, national director. The Teacher Corps project currently operates in cooperation with school systems in Asheville, and Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, and Transylvania counties. Teacher Corps interns now nember a total of 64, and work with 13 team leaders and four college supervisors in 18 dif ferent WNC public schools. Coordinations in each school system work with the university in the project. Western Carolina's Teacher Corps project was begun in 1966 under the direction of Dr. Ray B. Sizemore and by 1967 had acheived national distinction, marked by a visit from Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson. Procter succeeded Sizemore in 1968 and served until his death last December. Burchfield is professor of education in the School of Education and Psychology, and serves as a consultant to public school systems. He previously has served as director of public relations and summer school. Before joining the WCU faculty, he was dean of men, coach, and assistant to the president at Brevard College. His public school experience includes work as a teacher, coach, principal and assistant superintendent. The May Court election was held Thursday in McKee from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Approximately four hundred, maybe less, voted. The Senate Committee is very disappointed by the low percentage of votes cast. The candidates were as follows: Senior Class; Linda Allen, Sharon Glance, Susan Bradley, Cyndee Hefner, Pat Campbell, Joan Howard, Linda Davis, Bec- ly Ledford, Candy Gibson, Kathy Mitchell. Junior Class; Pam Barnes, Gail Ratledge, Suzanne Jones, Jackie Rhinehart, Carol McRae, PhyUls Royal, Betty Karate Tonight In Ballroom Of Student Center Yes, tonight starting at 8:00 pm in the Ballroom of the Student Center the Western Carolina Karate Academy headed by Mr. Carl Smith, will give an exhibition of the deadly art of Karate. There will be demonstrations of form, sparring, weapons, and breaking of boards, concrete blocks, and bricks. Self- defense techniques against up to four opponents will be shown. Some of the traditional weapons of karate; bo (long staff), yawara (fist staff) and sickle, will be demonstrated by Mr. Smith, Also. So for an unusual evening of entertainment be sure to stop by. Remember 8:00 p.m. tonight at the Student Center. Piedmont Orchestra To Present Concert Thursday The Piedmont Chamber Orchestra, a newly formed ensemble of internationally- known professional musicians, will be presented in concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Hinds University Center. The appearance at WCU is part of the first series of con certs by the orchestra which was formed through a $233,000 grant from the Rockefeller Foundation last spring to the North Carolina School of the Arts. Igor Buketoff, one of America's leading symphony conductors, is conducting the or chestra on its current tour of the Southeastern states. Candy Is majoring in elementary education. She is a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. Last year she served as Maid of Honor on the May Court. Carol McRae, a junior from Murphy, was elected Maid of Honor. Carol's major is psychology. She is a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. The staff of the Western Carolinian, along with the student body, extends their congratulations to Candy, Carol, and the rest of the May Court of 1969. Arts Symposium Will Be Held At Western THE PIEDMONT CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Confrontation with the Arts, a symposium on the place of cultural arts in education will be held March 6-7 at Western Carolina University. Smoky Mountain Cultural Arts Development Association, sponsors of the Confrontation, will present National experts on the arts, humanities, and learning, in addresses, and In panel and group discussions. Dr. Harry S. Broudy, keynote speaker, a front-rank leader in aesthetic education, is Professor of the Philosophy of Education at the University of Illinois. Other speakers include: Dr. Stanley Madaja, Director, Aesthetic Education Program, Regional Education Laboratory, St. Lous, Mo., formerly art education specialist for the Arts and Humanities Program, NEA; Jimmy E. Nations, Supervisor of Early Childhood Education, Montgomery Co., Maryland, formerly with U. S. Department of Education. Also Dean Herbert Way, School of Education, University of Miami, and President's Advisory Council for Title m, ESEA: Dean Everett Timm, School of Music, Louisiana State University. The aim of the symposium is to explore the best offerings in music, art, drama and dance for children in the schools. Invited to attend are school board members, local leaders, educators, professionals in the arts, and all interested people. SMCADA is a three year cooperative program in the schools of eight Western North Carolina counties to initiate and develop courses in music, art, drama, and dance. Operation began March 15, 1968 on a federal grant of $292,017 for the first year under Title HI of the Elementary and Secondary Fdurationi Act of 1965. USA To Fight CAB Over Youth Fares The United States National Student Association (NS) will fight the recommendations of a Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) examiner calling for the abolition of youth fares as "unjustly discriminatory," andhas retained legal counsel to prepare briefs and oral arguments for presentation before the CAB. The announcement of NSA's action came from Services Division director AlanC. Handell, who noted that at present the Association is the only group representing student users of the airline youth fare which will make arguments before the Federal board. Abolition of youth fares is being sought by a number of bus companies. NSA will argue that in view of the educational, social, economic, and cultural benefits afforded by the youth fares and young adult fares, the fares should not be cancelled. CONTINUED Page 2 . . .
