Team selects Gaines, Rathburn as co-captains A pair of three year starters with all-star credentials have been elected co-captains for the 1974 Western Carolina U- niversity football team, Jerry Gaines and David Rathburn were selected by their WCC teammates before last week's spring football game, Gaines, a wide receiver from Chesapeake. Virginia, has rewritten the Catamounts pass receiving records with his 118 receptions and 2,640 yards. He has twice been a first team selection on the North Carolina All-College team, Last year, when he also served as a team co-captain, was rhought to be his final season of collegiate competition, but the NCAA has granted Gaines another year of eligibility as he was on the field for only 14 plays before suffering a broken ankle that sidelined him for the remainder of the 1970 season, Rathburn,, a defensive cornerback from Asheville, has been a starter in the WCU secondary since midway of his freshman season. He has twice led the Cats in pass interceptions and fumble recoveries, Bob Waters, Western's head coach, heaped praise upon his 1974 team leaders. "Jerry is the best athlete I've ever coached and Dftvid is possibly the most consistent defensive player we have had in the past five years, Both have all the character and leadership qualities anyone could ask for in team captains." he stated. Western then dropped two matches on the road to Erskine College and The Citadel before reentering the win column by dominating South Carolina State 9-0, The Cats swapped with Wos- Chester State and Maryville College, 8-1 and 5-1 respectively, then journeyed to Statesboro, Georgia, to lose two straight to Georgia Southern College, one of the most powerful, teams in the South, The next four matches proved to be seesaw affairs as Western defeated UNC-Asheville, lost to a fine Carson-Newman team, beat Warren Wilson., and lost to another Southern power house, Furman University. Erskine College name to Cullowhee to hand the Cats their eighth loss of the year is opposed to five wins, A late season surge saw WCU score wins over Gardner-Webb, Warren Wilson, and UNC-Asheville while losing only to Carson- Newman, Tnis spurt set the final season mark at 8-9 for the Catamounts, Coach Rayburn is already- looking to next season, "Wo are losing some fine players," he remarked, "including this year's singles winner Joe Crocker (9-7), Bill Robinson and Miie Henderson. However, John McCoy, Joe Clark, and Bruce Honeycutt will be back to pace the team, so we feel we will again be competitive." The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
