The play, the second show of the 1978 summer theater season al WCU, is about the ups and downs ol show business life in Ness York City. Directed by Dr. J.C. Alexander, associate professor of speech and theater arts at WCU, the show wiH star Anne Stump, a WCU speech and theater arts major, as Annie. Other cast members include Sue-Lane Waldroup, a WCU music major from Weaverville; Bee Pfahler of Cullowhee: Nich Searcy of Cullowhee; and Maggie Mills of Cullowhee. Hie set will be designed by Jeff Clark, a recent WCU graduate from Henderson. liekets, costing $1 for WCU students, $2 for other adults and 50 cents for children, are available from the department of Speech and theater arts, 293-7491. Curtain time is 8 p.m. Marc Pruitt plays Marc Pruitt and his New Day Country Band will play bluegrass music on the front lawn of the Western Carolina University Hinds University Center 4:30-7:30 p.m. hulas. Pruitt. a WCU graduate, is a veteran of the Grand Ole Opry stage in Nashville, Tenn., and currently operates a music store in Asheville called the Pick 'n' Grin. A barbeque dinner will be served free to students with WCU meal tickets. Other persons will be charged $1.75 for the barbeque. The music is free. Nothing to do? Nothing to do this summer? Looking for adventure? The University Center and the Cullowhee Wilderness Outfitter will hold summer outdoor programs in rafting, canoeing, and kayaking during the months of June and July. Three half-day rafting trips down the Nantahala River svill be conducted June 28, July 5 and July 19. Following each rafting trip will be a cook-out. Food, rafting equipment, guides and transportation will be provided. The cost for each trip is $8. A two day overnight rafting trip will be held July 1 and 2 on the French Broad River and the Nolichucky River. All rafting equipment will be provided and participants are expected to bring their own food and camping equipment. The cost for the two day trip is $25. A two-day intermediate canoeing clinic will be held June 24 and 25. The cost is $16, which included CMOCSM equipment, instructions and transportation. Both beginning and intermediate kayaking clinics will be held. Beginners clinics, running half a day, will be held June 28 and July 26 on the Tuckaseegee River. 1 he cost for each of these clinics is $10. I lie intermediate kayaking clinic will be July 23 on the Natahala River. The cost of the intermediate clinic is SIS. All halt d.is clinics will begin at 2 p.m. Participants will meet at the Cullowhee Wilderness Outfitter in the Alpine Building in Cullowhee. Participants on overnight trips should meet at the Cullowhee Wilderness Outfitter at 8:30 a.m. For further information persons should contact Tim Jacobs at the University Center or Roger Roundtree at the Cullowhee Wilderness Outfitter. 4th celebrated The Jackson County Jaycees have announced a schedule of activities for the Fourth of July. The Jaycees activities will be held at Mark Watson field in Sylva, and include an egg toss, watermelon seed spitting contest, sack race, three-legged race, and home run derby. These activities will begin at 1 p.m. Evening activities will begin at 5 p.m. A concession stand will open and bingo will begin at 5:30, followed by a square dance at 8 p.m. Fireworks at 10 p.m. will conclude the day's festivities, 'Candida' plays Perched atop a mountain 4100 feet above sea level in the resort town of Highlands sits a rustic and miss famous summer stock theater known as the Highlands Playhouse. This 200-scat indoor theater in the beautiful western North Carolina mountains 70 miles SOUthweSt of Asheville begins its 40th season of summer fare July 7-16 with George Bernard Shaw's substantial comedv "Candida." Visitors to the mountaintop will also have.a chance to see "See How They Run" July 21-30; "Move Over. Mrs. Markham" Aug. 4-13; and "Six Rooms River View" Aug. 18-27. Audience demand for more performances made it possible for the Highlands' theatre to become a professional stock company, however, and now the Playhouse offers Tuesday through Saturday evening performances at 8:30 p.m. with two Sunday shows at 2 and 6 p.m. The company shares talent and management personnel with the Caldwell Playhouse of Boca Raton. Flick 'Mother' plays The newly formed Cullowhee Business Association held its scheduled clean-up Sunday along a half mile stretch of highway 107. The group collected 25 bags of trash during the day. The Wednesday night flick this week will be shown on Thursday night at 8 p.m. in Hoey. "Mother Jugs and Speed" is a comedy about the trials and tribulations of a private ambulance service who find time to save a few lives while outrunning their creditors as well as their competitors. The film is a mixture of fast talking anti-heroics, pure slapstick, and brutal realism. Each character imparts charm while trying to survive the terror which comes with dealing with disaster in the urban night where human life has its price plus 50 cents a mile. Admission is a buck.
