  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday November 29,1973 Page 7 1974 WCU Basketball Outlook Despite the lack of familiar names on Western Carolina University's pre-season basketball rosier, head coach Jim Harbarger says his 1973-74 edition has him "all excited." "I am looking forward to this season with more enthusiasm than at anytime in my four previous years here. . , . I think the enthusiasm of this team has rubbed off on me," the CaUtm nuts' mentor explained, Hartbarger will have to get a maximum amount of enthusiasm, hustle and other basketball intangibles to turn in a successful record against a 27- game card that includes meetings with strong newcomers Marshall, Auburn, Middle Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and exhibitions against a pair of prestigious touringclubs —Athletes In Action and the Australian National Olympic team. Then there are home-and- homc games with several old, tough rivals — Appalachian Suite, Lenoir-Rhyne, UNC - Asheville, Catawba, Carson— Newman, Elon, Belmont-Ab— bey and Mars Hill, "I don't know if we will be better or worse, record-wise, than last year's team," said Hartbarger, "but I do know that we will be a DIFFERENT team in many ways." The Cats' boss was referring primarily to his personnel and the style of play that he will employ this winter. Only one starter, fi'3" Albert Toomer, and three other lel- termen return from last vear's 12-13 squad, Toomer was that team's leading scorer (14.4 ppg) and sec ond best rebounder (7.1), but the next four regulars and scor- , ers- Howard Winston, Larry Grant, Wilson Scott, and Glymph Childress - are gone, Toomer, who will be listed as one of Western's finest and most exciting players when he finishes his collegiate career, will start at one of the wini? positions. His three returning teammates from last season figure to grab two of the remaining four starting berths, 6'4" Mike Stump and 6'6" sophomore Bobby Baucom are battling each other for a high post spot, Stump averaged 5.0 points in his junior season and Baucom was the varsity's top freshman last winter with a 6,5 scoring average, Dennis Sluder. a lightning- quick 5'6" junior letterman, is the leading candidate for the starting point position, bul At- TKE BOXING RESl LIS 1 WEIGHT CLASS 119-130 131-140 141-150 151-160 161-180 Randy Helderman Phillip Gennelt John Sales Larry Crane Levon Wilson Manny Taylor Donald Patum Stan Hudson George Helms Terry Aired WINNER Gennet - Decision Sales - Decision Taylor - TKO Hudson - TKO Helms - TKO Monfiedd Manns Cliff Parker 181-190 Manns - Decision Heavyweight lommy Metntire Best all round fighter John Sales Art Exhibit Shown Here A Picasso print, an oil col= lage by Sam Adler and a leather sculpture by Caroline Mon= tague are among the works on exhibit at Western Carolina University's first regional art collectors show. Newcomers are the predominate figures in the two remaining starting berths, Lee Gibbs, a Sandhills Community College transfer, has been an eye-opener with his versatility and appears to have the other wing spot secured, Hal Hawkins, also up from the frosh squad, will provide back up strength, The low post, a problem spot for the Catamounts in the past two campaigns, appears to be a strong point this season with 6'9'' Kirby Thurston, Miami- Dade North JC transfer, capable of scoring and rebounding in the double figures, 6'5" George Dodkin, out of Spartanburg (SC) Junior College, will see a lot of action here, Steve Burnet- le, a 6*11"* freshman who missed last season with a broken leg, is being groomed for the future, "This team's hustle and quickness will alow us to change our offensive and defensive philosophies this yea, ," revealed Hartbarger, "We are going to run more than al anytime since 1 have been here and will gamble more with a Fee For Aussie-Cat Game Tonite THE WCU-AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM BASKETBALL GAME IN RFID GYMNASIl M THURSDAY NIGHT IS AN EXHIBITION GAMF.
