It was recommended that a Calendar Committee be established with representatives from students, faculty and administration. A committee was appointed and is trying to determine which type of calendar is most desired by members of Western Carolina University by submitting the following questionnaire. Completed questionnaires should be given to a member of the committee, sent through the mail to Dean Cecil Brooks in Bird Administration Building, Room 200 or submitted to the receptionist in the Registrar's Office not later than Friday, May 25. The purpose of this questionnaire is to solicit your recommendations on future academic calendars at Western Carolina University. A 1972 survey revealed that the following number of institutions of higher learning in the United States planned to use the indicated academic calendar for the 1972-73 school year. traditional semester early semester quarter .......... 354 trimester . \ 974 4-1-4 .... 585 other , . 81 . 329 . . 125 Under the traditional semester calendar, the first semester begins in late September and ends in late January, the second semester ends in early June. Under the quarter system, the year is divided into four eleven week quarters with the fall, winter, and spring constituting a normal academic year. Under the trimester calendar, the year is divided into three equal parts, usually sixteen weeks each. On some campuses, the summer trimester is divided into A and B parts. Under the 4-1-4 plan, the first semester begins in September and ends before Christmas. January is devoted to a one-month intern program, when students take one course, frequently of an perimental nature. That is followed by a second semester, beginning in February and ending in June.
