Students in Co-op positions this summer'represent 18 majors from all five undergraduate Schools of the University. Positions are competitive and usually in volve pre-professional training at salaries averaging over $830 per month. Fitness by Rick McDaniel While most of us are still in bed, a group of Jackson County residents are up and running. These people are among the thirty participants in an early morning fitness class sponsored by the WCU Continuing Education Department. The program, taught by Dr. Arthur Pilch of the Health and P.E. Department, meets at 6:15 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Participants engage in a form of exercise known as Aerobics, which involves running, swimming, or stationary bicycling. The participants in the program must have a statement from their family physician in order to register for the program. This is done so that the physician will know that the person is doing the exercises in the class, and also to screen out any obvious problems the person might have. Upon being admitted to the program, a doctor gives the participants a complete physical including a resting electrocardiogram, blood tests for triglycerides and cholesterol, and another electrocardiogram taken while running. These tests are to determine the person's health and to tailor the program to the needs of the individual. They are also used to judge progress, and are administered again after one year. Pilch says that the tests help motivate the participants when they see that their efforts to get in shape are paying off. From Page 1 1978-79 1979-80 1980-81 Students Receiving Guaranteed Loans 223 476 868 Dollars $ 281,798 $ 683,774 $1,483,169 The increase from 1978-79 to 1980-81 is an incredible 426%. Also during this time students who receive aid of some type (loans, grants, GI bills and self-employment) increased from 52% in 1978-79 to 66% in 1980-81. As financial hardships increased over the past few years more and more students sought aid of some sort. Now that a conservative swing is in motion, the government is cutting off certain programs and aid to college students is one of them. The decrease in the availability of campus based funds will definitely affect students this fall, while the guaranteed loans will effect students after graduation as the government will no longer be paying the entire amount of interest. So no matter how one looks at the situation, hard times are definitely here, and probably will stay for a while. ♦NOW OPEN* Paperchase Book Exchange East Sylva Shopping Center, near Quinn Theatre.
