  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday Jan. 18, 1973 page 3 Poet Bertha Harris To Give Recital Jan. 29 Bertha Harris, well-known North Carolinanovelistandpoet will give a public lecture at Western Carolina University January 29 at 7 pm in the Cherokee Room of the A.K. Hinds University Center. Bertha Harris' two published novels are "Catching Sara- dove" and "Confessions of Cherubino." She is on leave from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte while serving as director of women's studies at Richmond College in Staten Island. The Bertha Harris program will be a part of a "Women's Awareness Symposium" sponsored by the Office for Student Development, the University Center Board, Department of Student Housing, and the American Association of University Women. The symposium is an eight-part series of programs, plays, art shows, movies and lectures open to the public during January and February at WCU. Events, at 7 pm in the Cherokee Room, will be: January 22: "Growing up Female: As Six Becomes One," a film on the position of women in American society and the movement by women to change that position. January 25: "The Independent Female (Or A Man Has His Pride)," a satricial melodrama directed by Sonja Beckham. January 29: Bertha Harris; also, art show by women, Center gallery. February 5: "Images of Women in Literature,"a lecture by Dr. Marilyn Jody exploring stereotypical images of women in literature. February 7: "Womenas Represented in Art History," slide presentation by Mrs. Linda Moore. February 12: "Marriage and its Alternatives," a panel discussion moderated by the Rev. Joe David Fore, on marriage and concepts of panelists on the institution of marriage. February 19: "Self-Concepts a s Reflected in Career Choice," a panel presentation, moderated by Dean Barbara Mann, examining some of the non-traditional career , choices available to women. Russell L. Stevens Receives New Job Russell L. Stevens, residence hall coordinator at Western Carolina University for the past 18 months, has been named assistant director of student housing. Stevens will have primary responsibility for staff recruit- ment and retention, staff development, programming, discipline, counseling, and "the transition to a more academically involved role for the entire housing operation," accord- inging to D.-. Tyler Combs, director of student housing. Stevens duties will include acting as a liaison person between the housing staff and the faculty in the development of residence hall tutorial services, educational programming, and staff academic participation. A native of Walloon Lake, Mich., Stevens holds a bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University anda master's degree from Wayne State University, He is a member of the American Personnel and Guidance Association, National Association of Personnel Administrators, and Southern College Personnell Association. A photo-reconaissance pilot in World War II, he has been active in Scout work, the Methodist Church, and civic and educational groups. GI Bill Checks Troubles The S400-plus that most GI Bill students received in November may cause some recalculations for end-of-school budgets, H.W. Johnson, Director of the Winston-Salem Veterans Administration Regional Office, reminded veterans. Because the October law that brought increased monthly ;sub. sistence allowances also gave VA authority to make payments | at the beginning of the month, there will be no check when RUSSELL L. STEVENS Third Annual Art Exhibit The Western Carolina University Art Department opened its Third Annual Regional Artists Exhibition with a reception for the artists on Sunday, January 14. The exhibition is in the Art Department Gallerj of the Belk Building. This year's exhibition consists of 46 works by 26 artists who reside in the western region of North Carolina. The show is non-juried and is meant to represent the diversity of painting, drawing, and printmaking by artists in the region. The exhibition will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m, through the month of January. Cornelius Bros, and Sister Hose will be in concert here Thursday, Jan, 25, at 8 p.m, in Reid Gymnasium. Appearing with them will be the 3 Prophets, formerly with the Georgia Prophets, Sponsored by Student Govt. Productions, the concert will be free to all showing an activity card and ID.
