  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Monday, May 4, 1971 7 Cats clinch District Six playoff spot Western Carolina's Catamounts have clinched both the number two regular season slot and a berth In the NAIA Dis. trlct Six playoffs. Coach Bill Haywood's Cats took sole possession of the second district spot last Thursday as they downed S.C. State 5-1. After a narrow 4-2 loss to Georgia Tech last Saturday, WCU returned home to down district rival Erskine 8-4 yesterday in a game which eliminated Erskine from a possible playoff berth. Appalachian is leading the district with a nifty 9-0 mark and will be seeded number one in the playoffs. Western is second with a 9-2 record fol= lowed by S.C. State with a 7-3. Newberry's 6-4 mark rounds out the four team field slated for the tourney. WCU will play S.C. State in the first game of the district tournament at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 13. The play offs will be held in Greenwood, S.C. Erskine's Flying Fleet, which handed WCU its worst district loss of the season 9-2 earlier, saw its playoffs hopes all but smashed as the Cats freshman hurler Don Bright stopped the Fleet's hitting attack and collected three hits at the plate In yesterday's rout. All-District performer Fred Coan had a perfect day at the plate for Erskine as he collected five hits in as many attempts. The last one was a long homer. The big hits for WCU were a two RBI single in the first Inning by Larry Goodwin, a 350-foot two-run homer by Ron Wall in the second, a two-run standing triple by Bruce West, and a combination single/ throwing error hit by John Booth for two more. Western scored two runs in the sixth against S.C. State to break a 3-3 knot and backed it up with steady relief pitching by Don Bright and Glen Glover for their win at Orangeburg last Thursday. Noland Smathers, who hurled the first five innings, was the winning pitcher for WCU. His record now is 3-3. Three hits, two of them doubles, by Tommy Hayes led the Cats plate attack. John Booth followed with three base hits and Bruce West had three RBI's with two hits. The Yellowjackets of Georgia Tech, now ranked 10th In the latest NCAA major college poll, broke the Catamounts six-game win streak with three unearned runs. Tech, who Is now 24-2, converted four walks by WCU starting pitcher Wayne McCauley and the only Catamount error of the game for a 3 0 third inning lead. Western scored their only two runs in the fourth on singles by Ronnie Wall and Jimmy Laughridge, an error and a fielder's choice. The Yellowjackets Cam Boni- fay doubled in Tech's only •aimed run of the day in the fifth to take a 4-2 winning margin.
