  • 16 Western Carolinian/September 2, 1982 from page 15 played rock n roll on tne new outdoor stage of the university center during dinner on the lawn. The Hollywood Brats received a lot of good comments and should be back sometime this semester. On Tuesday lee cream sundaes were served on the U.C, lawn for only 25c. During August 25 through Sept. 3 wdeo taped concerts of contemporary rock music will be shown on the second floor of the U.C. from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.daily. LMP worked closely with student development during western roundup by booking the rigel band for an outdoor rock session during dinner on the lawn and then showing the movie "Neighbors" in Hoey Auditorium. On Friday night, Aug. 27, "Airplane" was shown to almost 400 people in Hoey Auditorium. What's on tap for the future? Last Minute Productions has over 70 events planned for fall semester with more on the way. 36 of these events are planned for the first 5 weeks of school. These events include canow and kayak trips, classes ranging from Yoga, guitar, clogging aerobics, jazzercise, to photography, future trips for skiing in Telluride, Colorado, hiking in the Grand Canyon, and rafting down the Gauley River in West Virginia, Tournaments, Hypnotists, and movies almost every Friday night. All programs and activities are advertised on hundreds of promotional posters around campus. Interested in finding out more? Call IMP at 227-7497 or come by to see us, 2nd floor of the U.C. Last Minute Productions is looking for 25 dependable volunteers to work with them . Unlike before these members will have a vote on programs done for the students. Their title will be the Last Minute Producers. Besides voting, other responisibities will include giving ideas for designated programs, plus other events that they would like to work. There will be many surprise benefits for the volunteers. Having had a sneak preview of these benefits, it would be worth anyone's time to become involved. Any other volunteers who are not selected for this committee will be able to work the major concerts and of course LMP will always look forward to people coming by and giving ideas for events. I hope that I might serve those students who will read my weekly column here in the Western Carolinian. I truly feel that entertainment is a very important part of each person's life and is a basic necessity. Keeping you the student informed is my goal so that you may have a much more fullfulling stay at Western Carolina University. On that note, I'll see you at the next Last Minute Productions event. U Little Theo 55 Will Theodosius, most eligible bachelor in the world, find the perfect bride to be his Empress? Maybe vou have the makings of an ideal Theodosius. Auditions for "Little Theo," an original musical comedy by WCU professor Constance Head, will be held Tuesday, September 7, at 7 p.m. in the Little Theatre. If you are interested, bring a prepared song with sheet music. There are parts for eight men and eight women, and all are open to any student who is interested. If working with sets and costumes interests you, there are also jobs for extras in those areas. Graced With Londa Crenshaw Recently, Cullowhee was graced with one of the finest musical talents ever to appear in this area. For those that did not have the opportunity to see Londa Crenshaw, you have one last chance to enjoy her performance. Londa will play tonight at Thirsty's. Things should be cookin' by 8:00 pm. Crenshaw will be returning to Louisville soon, and Thirsty's promises to have Londa back whenever possible. Crenshaw is a powerful and inspiring acoustic guitarist who has been playing since the age of 12. Although Londa plays hits by popular artists, 60 to 70 percent of her music is exclusively Londa's own compositions. Local favorites include: "On My Mind", "A Little Taste", and "Everybody Oughta Have a Wife." Crenshaw has never attended formal music schools but, nevertheless, is very accomplished in music compositions. When asked to explain her musical style, Londa is often confronted with this question and feels that her music cannot be "loosely categorized." Londa hopes to publish her own music and avoid the high fees charged by publishers. Her Ovation Custom guitar delivers a dynamite sound. Crenshaw explains that she has been influenced by many different musicians, ranging from The Beatles to Dan Fogleberg. Londa is a supporter of the anti-nuke movement and has played at The Concert for a United Safe Earth. Her feelings for the issue are expressed in songs entitled: "Hollow Tower" and "Three Mile Island Song." Londa Crenshaw has made a lasting impression on each and every audience she performs for. It would be a great understatement to say that Londa & co. will be missed. Hopefully, she will find her way back soon. For all that missed Londa's performance this summer catch it tonight at Thirsty's. His skill in handling sensitive films is evident in "Close Encounters" and "E.T."; now, he swings to the other end of the spectrum and focuses on his talent for the terrifying with his film "Poltergeist". Spielberg, known for writing or directing his earlier films, now tries his hand at producing. He is also author of the story on which the screenplay is based, and co- writer of the screenplay, along with Michael Grais and Mark Victor. Though the director's chair is filled this time byTobe Hooper("TheTexasChainsaw Massacre"), the film still reflects the typical Spielberg flavor. There's a remote hint of Disney evident, as usual, but it's overpowered by Spielberg's playing up of the subconscious fears we've all nurtured since childhood. Those "things that go bump in the night" that we were so terrified of, but eventually realized to be fantasy, return with a sobering, frightening slap of reality. "Poltergeist" is a term translated from German, meaning "noisy or mischievous ghost". That description is drastically understated and inappropriate in this film; the ghosts shown are nothing short of bloodthirsty, vengeful, and horrifying in their actions. The unwitting recipients of the hauntings are the members of the Freeling family—husband Steve (Craig T. Nelson), wife Diane (Jo-Beth Williams), and their three children (Heather O'Roarke, Dominique Dunn, and Oliver Robbins). Though at first there are harmless happenings, such as moving furniture and communicating with the youngest child through the TV, the events soon escalate into terrifying attacks on the family and disappearance of the youngest child. The family subsequently consults a parapsychology expert (Beatrice Straight) and her assistants, who agree to investigate the unusual happenings. These happenings, which include fierce rainstorms, levitation of objects and people, and ghostly visitations, are presented courtesy of the Industrial Light Magic special effects company. Having provided visual effects for such films as "Star Wars" and "Star Trek II", ILM's contributions to "Poltergeist" are stunningly convincing—and very frightening. The film relies heavily on its fright scenes, most of which are heightened by macabre images of cadavers or other such gut-wrenching visions. While fright is essential to the story, having to depend on visual gore for the shocks is sort of a "cop-out". Still, the makeup work used to accomplish these scenes is remarkably effective. The impact on the audience is such that, rather than react in a frightened way, some people inadvertently laughed—a sure sign that the fright effects are working. Though it has numerous other pluses—a stunning musical score by composer Jerry Goldsmith, and excellent cinematography and film editing—the film's most important aspect is its preying upon our primal fears. When you go home after seeing "Poltergeist", you'll probably feel a little uneasy—maybe even look in your closet or under the bed before you go to sleep. In any case, keep telling yourself "It's only a movie", and be wary of things that go bump in the night.
