  • 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN January 29, 1971 The Cats AND THE JUNGLE it/ jMtjk j<M mid, Ladies and gentlemen (also waste-can rats and others who may partake in toe reading of this column): Whether you have noticed it or not, toe month of January has 28toed on us. It has done so only after having prior to this time having done its 27toing in our presence. Hitoertoforto we may now safely mention that on toe 27th of January something did not happen. Around Western Carolina when something does not happen, especially In toe realm of athletics, one might consider toe proper name Lenoir-Rhyne. This is a good guess. Once again it was Lenoir-Rhyne that did not happen. They were scheduled to tangle with the Catamounts on toe 27th„ Like they didn't do on January the 7th, they also didn't do this time. They have graciously bestowed upon our illustrious record an animal called a forfeit (a nice term that means to coward, to'chicken, or to oversleep). Anyways, we win—they lose, no matter how you see it, Now that brings us around to toe Catamounts record this season, that just happens to be 14-3. Coach Jim Hart- barger's Cats have won their last eight straight including the L-R gift. This is good. If toe Cats dismantle Elon this Saturday night, it will be nine straight. This is better. And then commence to re-defeat (they've already beat them one time) South Carolina State here on Monday—they will have equalled toe longest win streak in WCU basketball history. It is ten—set by toe 1961-62 team. This would be best The record f v toe most wins in a single season is 28, also set in 1961-62. Being as how we on'v got 11 games remaining, that seems a little far fetched. Yet If we -ould win them all, we would become toe owners of toe best s • ->n record ever established at WCU,, It would be 25-3 an! at the old record of 24-4 set during toe 1958-59 season. If we win 10 of toe 11 remaining, we would tie it Now. Assuming we finish toe regular season 25-3 or 24-4, we would still be in toe district tournament. We play two games there and wm them both—poof—we are 27-3 or 26-4. Just one or two away from that all time win record and going to toe nationals, What I'm trying to tell you folks is that we could just possibly have toe best Catamount basketball team in WCU history by March 5. Also I am hinting to toe team as to how far they have come and how short a distance they have to go. Do it The talent is there. Do it Some of you poolies, foosballers, and pin-ballers may think you are not being eyed. Well, desist from such vile thoughts. I know occasionally a champ emerges from your ranks. Fact is one did this week. He beat toe machine. Last Monday night word has it that one Jerry "Chet toe Jet" Atkins attacked and mauled toe pin-ball machine for 13 games on one small fourth of a dollar. For that sterling performance, Chet may be sent to Inner Slobbovia for toe world championships. Assuming a team of doctors at toe infirmary can bring him out of shock. Livingston Kelly is scheduled to row him to toe tournament through toe Arctic Sea on an Inner-tube. Remember sportsfans, if perchance you meet a green snake on your way to toe john, do not (I repeat DO NOT) attempt to fondle it It may be just as dangerous as a ripe one.
