April 29, 1998 Volume 62, Issue 28 western Carolina university's independent student voice Western Trashes Appalachian by Don Costello The WCU baseball team came alive behind the plate this weekend with an impressive three-game sweep of hated rival Appalachian State. Western pounded out 38 runs in the three games in Boone by taking advantage of a Mountaineer pitching staff with a team earned run average of 8.68. "We swung the bats well against Appalachian," said coach Rodney Hennon. "For the first time this year everyone's in sync offensively." The weekend series started out rough for the Catamounts as ASU jumped on ace Mark DiFelice for six runs in the first t hree innings in the first game of the Saturday double- header. Western trailed the Mountaineers 7-3 going into the Catamount half of the seventh inning. That's when the offensive flood gates opened for Western. Martin Barrow led off the inning with a ground out before Charles Thomas reached on a single. Chris Moore followed with a walk and then Jeff Sziksai belted a three-run homer to bring the Catamounts to within one run. Matt Stillwell tied up the contest on a bloop single to right field that scored Jeremy Bruce. Eight more runs crossed the plate in the inning, including another three-run blast by Trashin App, continued on page 14 ^gfr * ^^ „ HI ■ *^ ^jsiiiiir^ a££^. . w ■v 1 ^r^k ^*H HRSH^HB ^32 ^V*. * i^H Wy^WWH 1 K ^^H^hk_ '.' 1 ■BimHninWHB & H :.. :-:^ - • / *» Steve Harris, Catamount third baseman; Hero Off the Field, see story page 10 -photo by T.K Roberts The Year In Review Compiled by Seth R. Sams Throughout the past year, the Western Carolinian has covered a variety of issues. Some have appealed to the student body more than others, and some have applied more to the student body than others. As this semester comes to a close, the Carolinian would like to sum up all the issues that have come to light over the past year. September 3,1997 • Parking at WCU: Problem or Not? There are exactly 4,964 parking spaces on the WCU campus. Taking that and the fact that Public Safety has already issued over 5,740 parking stickers into consideration, it would seem that Western definitely does have a parking problem. September 10,1997 • One-Card Office Cleans Up Copy Card Controversy, Offers New Services Last year, WCU ran into trouble with Capital Copy, Inc., the company Western contracted to place copy machines on certain locations around campus. Due to what Capital Copy representative Dale Prichett cited as "software problems in the copiers' coin boxes and card readers," many WCU students were able to run up illegal balances in excess of $600. September 17,1997 • Alcohol Cited in Teen Death Timothy Charles Hensley, a 15-year-old male non-student from Madison County, died of apparent alcohol poisoning while on a camping trip at Lake Glenville (Thorpe Reservoir). Accompanying Hensley were six Western Carolina University students, including his sister, and one other non-student. According to Detective Darrin Young of the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, all were under the legal drinking age of 21. October IS, 1997 • SGA Passes Resolutions Concerning Computer Requirement, Other Issues A major issue right now in the WCU community right now is whether or not to accept Chancellor Bardo's policy that would require freshmen entering in the fall of 1998 to have computers when they come to campus. Resolution 1819 of the SGA was an "Act to voice our [SGA's] support for [the]... 'Com puter Requirement Proposal.'" • Prospective Students React to Computer Proposal High school seniors view Chancellor Bard's proposal to require incoming students to own personal computers with mixed feelings, according to responses gathered by a Carolinian poll. January 21,1998 • Accident Injures Two Students Two WCU students were seriously injured Thursday evening, January 15, in an accident on Highway 107 near the Ramsey Center. • WCU Restores One-Day Fall Break In the fall of 1997, fall break was canceled. Due to all of the complaints voiced by the faculty and students, the fall of 1998 will bring back at least some of this desired and needed vacation. February 4,1998 • Bye-Bye to Bailey's Popular Sylva hangout Bailey's Bar and Grill was closed, leaving many WCU students asking why. An anonymous source close to the Bailey's establishment has stated that the closing was due to "delinquent payments." February 11,1998 • Vandalism on Campus Hits New High Vandalism has reached what seems to be a high point this academic year. Broken glass in area businesses have cost owners $700 or more, and cars parked on campus have become a large target recently. • Sexual Harassment Case Resolved A sexual harassment case involving a 24-year-old female student who graduated in May 1997 and a WCU associate professor was settled out of court recently. The professor agreed to pay the student $10,800 and apologize in writing. In addition, he must receive at least four hours of sexual harassment counseling from a licensed psychologist outside of WCU staff. Year in Review, continued on page 4
