Winning the conference title gives the champion the bye in the first round of the conference double-elimination tournament. The winner of the conference tournament earns the automatic bid for the NCAA Regional Playoffs. "We've got lo play good baseball. They're a good team, they pitch well and play good defense," added Leggett. "They don't usually beat themselves. We need to try to put the pressure on them from the beginning. There's no question in my mind that we'll be ready lo play." The champion will be determined by who wins the most games in this series. Weather forecasts have placed a damper on the weekend outlook and should the games be shortened to two, Western will have to sweepjo win the title. A split will give The Citadel the regular season championship. Should weather cut the games down to one, it is winner take all, showdown at Childress field. For the Cats, many people have made names for themselves. Freshman pitcherPhillipGrundy was the NCAA's winningest pitcher before last week's rainouts wilh his 8- 2 record. The rookie right-hander is now currently tied for fifth in the nation, and he will make a start against the Bulldogs. Matt Raleigh is ready to PUZZLE SOLUTION stake another claim on a conference staked a claim of his own for now, honor for the third consecutive season wilh his .397 balling average, 9 HR's, 38 RBI's,and 13 stolen bases. The junior third baseman has commitcd only two errors at third base thus far in the season. The younger of the two Raleigh brothers, Matt won Freshman of the Year two years ago, and was first team all- conference last season. Older brother Todd has along with another Catamount. The conference RBI leader (with 53) is ranked 23rd in the NCAA and Kevin Bellomo, leading the conference in batting (.437), ranks 37th in the nation. In other superlatives, the Cats' Bellomo is the only batter in the conference hitting over .400 and Western as a team is the only one hitting over .300. Catsnetfbigf recruit Gregg Blatt, Western Carolina University's head basketball coach, has opened the spring National Letter of Intent Tennis teams sweep two matches Sunday and Monday Tony Bolick Sports Editor The Western Carolina Men's and women's tennis teams swept conference rival Appalachian State and Lincoln-Memorial this past weekend in Cullowhee. The Lady Cats were competing against Georgia College yesterday and will depart for Asheville for ihe Southern Conference Tournament on Friday April 19. The Catamounts disposed of the Mountaineers on Sunday by identical scores of 8 matches to one for both the men and women. Lincoln-Memorial came inlo town on Monday and was defeated 5-4 by the men while the Lady Cats blanked L- MU9-0. The victories for the men's division raised their record to 13-11 overall while giving them a .500 record in the conference at 2-2 good enough for fourth place with only 2 matches to go before the conference tournament on April 26-28 in Asheville. The women's record improved toll-10 overall with a conference standing of 2-2. The Lady Cats are in fourth place in the conference entering the conference tournament Friday through Sunday in Asheville. The Cats outshot the Mountaineers Sunday only losing one singles match in the entire men's division.. The ladies enjoyed a perfect day until the final doubles match went to ASU to avoid the shutout. On Monday, Lincoln-Memorial quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the men's singles before settling fora 3-3 split. L-M took the lead in the opening doubles pairing before losing the next two games and the match. The women won a 9-0 shutout and only lost a toial of nine games and were the benefactors of two forfeits; one singles match and a doubles match. Three matches were 6-0, 6-0 wins, wilh the one doubles win ending in only eight points lost for the match. signing period wilh a "big" signee. Jeff VanDeMark, a six foot 10 inch Knoxville, Tennessee product became Western Carolina's tallest basketball signee in five years when he signed wilh the Catamounts Wednesday evening. VanDeMark will join six foot, six inch Kevin O'Brien, a forward at Pope High in Marietta, Georgia, as a freshman at WCU in August. O'Brien signed with the Catamounts in last November's early signing period. VanDeMark was an All- Knox ville Interscholasuc League selection following the recently completed season. He was the most valuable player at Doyle High where he averaged 17.8 points, 13.0 rebounds and six blocked shots per game last season. In his three seasons at Doyle, he blocked 320 shots, pulled down 792 rebounds, and scored over 1,000 points. "The addition of Jeff is a real shot in the arm for our program," said Blatt in announcing the signing. "His size and skills, along wilh his work ethic and determination, really excites me. He has the potential to be a very good college basketball player," he added. Blatt cited the recruiting efforts of Keith Walker, one of his assistant basketball coaches, with akey to the signing of VanDeMark. "Quality assistant coaches are invaluable during the recruiting process. Keith Walker did a fantastic job with Jeff and deserves a great deal of credit," he noted. After signing with WCU in November, O'Brien turned a banner season at Marietta's Pope High. He averaged 22 points as he shot 57 percent from the floor and pulled 12 rebounds a game in leading his team to a 24-2 record and the 6-AAAA sub-region championship. He was coplayer of the year in Cobb County and was named to the Atlanta Journal- Constitution's second team AAAA All-State Team. Keith Walker, credited with the signing told The Carolinian that Jeff was a real find and could be a great boost to the program at WCU. VanDeMark is said to have great hands with a very soft touch. Walker has said that although he will not be a great impact player in the league until he has more experience, he does say the impact on the Western Carolina basketball program will be felt next season. He said he could be a great player in two years.
