  • Thursday, October 2,1969 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN CatamountsOweHarvey's Mom A Big Thank-you The WCU Catamounts owe Harvey Walker's mom a big thank you!! The former Baltimore, Md., prep star credits his mother with his entrance here. "My mother was responsible for me coming to Western Carolina," the lean sophomore speedster commented. "She was born in the eastern part of the state and when it came time to choose which school I would attend she picked a school in North Carolina." Harvey's play so far this season as a varsity starter makes his mother's decision an important one lor WCU. Most football players would be satisfied with a 67-yard kickoff return, a 65-yard punt return and two interceptions in two games. Not Western Carolina's Harvey Walker. Walker, 5-foot=ll, 168 pounds, brought Western Carolina fans to their feet in toe second quar ter of toe Cats opener against Carson-Newman with a 67-yard kickoff return. He caught toe ball on the five, charged up the middle, then cut away from his blockers and down toe left side to mid- field, where he cut back and zig-zagged his way to toe 38- yard line. Along toe way he broke eight tackles and ran more than toe length of toe football field. "It really made me mad," Walker says. "I should have scored, it was my fault I got tired near the end of the run, I realized that I'd have to run a little more in practice, just in case I had a chance like that against Appalachian." He did, of course, returning a punt 65 yards for a touchdown to give the Catamounts a 28=7 lead early in toe fourth quarter. Walker also raced 34 yards on a pass interception vs the Apps. "He has not only excellent speed and quickness and good balance, he also has toe ability to give tacklers the limp leg—when toey hit his feet, he bounces off, because his feet aren't planted," Waters says. Walker runs like toe sheriff and toe bloodhounds are hot on his heels. He learned to run that way in high school at tiny Mt Saint Joseph's in Baltimore, where toe big schools made 'em take it on the chin each game his senior year except one. Walker scored foru TIPs in that game, including two TD punt returns, and ran over all the conversions. He came to Western Carolina because his mother, who was born in the eastern part of toe state, wanted him to go to college in North Carolina. Walker looked good last season as toe leading rusher on wcu's freshman team, despite a dislocated elbow whic h kept him from carrying but onetime for nine yards for the varsity. In spring practice, Coach Bob Waters reshuffled the Cats'defensive secondary, and Walker won a starting spot at corner- back. Waters hasnt regretted that decision one bit, for toe secondary has held toe opposition to 157.5 yards passing a game, compared to 211 yards a game last season. But it's Walker's big plays the fans remember, "I just like to play," Walker says, "wherever the coaches feel I'm needed. I dont think I could work any harder for any coach as I would for Coach Waters and Coach Denning(Don Denning, defensive coordinator), they're great" A SUCCESSFUL FORM- Western Carolina's punt return specialist Harvey Walker works-out in preparation for Saturday's game against JacksonviUe State. Walker's form thus far this season has netted toe Catamounts one TD and two key pass interceptions. The Cat freshmen had rallied from a 14-7 deficit to tie the score 14-14 before toe roof fell in. Steve Kerhoulas intercepted a Mars Hill pass late in toe third period to set up the apparent go ahead score, David Jackson bulled five yards for a first and goal at the Lions' eight yard line. Two plays later with the ball resting on toe 13-yard line after a five - yard loss by Bill Darby, WCU quarterback Bob Campbell drilled a scoring pass to end Jim Fox, but the play was nul • lifie" by a holding penalty. The Cats were set back 15- yards and also lost a down. With a fourth down situation, Campbell was caught for a nine yard loss and the Cats were penalized another five to move the back to the Lions' 42. Mars Hill took over to halt a brief three down surge. Free movies of all away football games will be shown Monday, October 6, 7:00 p.m., Blue Room, A, K. Hinds University Center, The contest was an impressive first shewing for Coach Jim Taylor's Cats despite the defeat C ami bell moved toe team well both on toe ground and in the air. He had three passes picked off, but all were deflected into toe hands of toe opponent Darby and Beaty ran well for WCU with Jackson coming a- round late in the game. Mike Mabry, Frankie Brown. Gordon Ashbelle, BUI Bloomer, Scott; Orr and Mike Kcllar put in fine defensive performances, Intramurals Western Carolina's intramural football season begins Tuesday, Oct 7 for National League teams, Wednesday, Oct 8 for Fraternity teams. AU National League games wUl be played on Tuesdays and aU Fraternity games on Wednesday for toe duration of toe season. Freshman teams will begin play on Monday, Oct 13. The tournament this year wiU be a round-robin type with each team playing only those teams in their division. Each team in toe tournament will play a total of four games.
