  • Page 2 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, October 2. lftwo Men Prefer Closed Study "I'll tell you something, I would never study without itl" This seems to echo the feelings of the majority pf freshmen men at WCU this year concerning "closed study*" Closed study has been with us at the University for many years, but the novelty of the affair i s that it was for freshmen women, not freshmen men. This was something freshmen men hadn't counted on. When asked what brought about this revolutionary change Dean Davis. Dean of men at WCU said, "There were three major reasons for this change (1) we wanted to make the incoming freshmen men and women as equal as we could, (2) we believe it will help freshmen men to adjust more easily to their new academic environment, and (3) in surveys we conducted of last year's freshmen women, 90% were in favor of closed study." Dean Davis stressed, "This was not intended to be a disiplinary action, it was meant to help." By LEWIS POWELL BELL The question quickly comes to mind, "Will it help?" Better yet, help what? In exploring we found that in past years, freshmen women far surpass freshmen men academically in the first quarter at WCU. Their point average shows that either the men are just dumb or the women had a lead somewhere. Taking this into consideration, and the past freshmen women favor it, Men's House Govern- ment passed the rule for closed study. This measure would seem to be a mothering action on behalf of the University. This feeling seems proved by Mrs. Harris, hostess of Moore resident hall, "The closed study hours provide an additional factor to persuade students to study. Students who would oc- dinarily not have the will power to study do so." Does this measure make freshmen men seem unable to run their own lives or is it welcome? Most Moore freshmen prefer the latter. Freshman Calk President About Draft Status By JIM ROWELL Among the hundreds of freshmen names and faces at Western Carolina, J. T. Likes who resides in room 402 Madison was not well-known. At least, he was not well-known until last Monday. On Thursday of last week, J. T. received a call from his parents in Eden, N. C, informing him that his local selec tive . service board had re~ classified him 1-A. The hot breath of the draft was upon him. J. T„ did not shrink in fear, nor did he catch the first bus from Sylva to Canada. What he did instead was to wait calmly until Monday and then pick up the telephone on the fourth floor of Madison. "I would like to place a call to the President," J. T. said confidently to the long distance operator. "The president of what?!" was her reply. "The President of the United States of America," J. T0 said. The next question the operator asked was a classic, "Are you drunk?!" This did not discourage J. T. Likes however. He simply ex- ::™:i : m : plained the fate that had befallen him. After a few minutes of red tape, J. T„ was speaking to Spiro Agnew, the Vice President of the United States. Agnew told J. T. that President Nixon was in a cabinet meeting at that time, but that he would help him if possible. J. T. told Agnew that he had been accepted at another school but had come to Western instead, enrolled as a pre-med student And then suddenly he had been classified 1-A. Agnew advised that J. T. submit a written appeal directly to the President He also promised to place a message on the President's desk concerning the affair. After the conversation, J. T. felt the hot breath no more,, Asa tribute to J. T.'s bravery and daring in attempting such a call, the men on his hall took up a collection to pay for it, J. T„ has distingushedhis face from the crowd's. Isn't it amazing what WCU freshmen do? "In high school I wouldn't study unless someone made me —it's great!" These freshmen men like others perfer close, study, but as we have all learned, "all that glitters is not gold." Close study, thus far, hasi been a pain in the neck, not to the students but to the hostess and counselors at Moore resident hall. Mres. Harris says, "If we are going to have close study, they should not be wishy-washy about it," Rules are all fine and good but they must be enforced and they must be understood! The students like close study and say it will help. Let's see if the administration can be a little more exact in its ruling. Freshmen men, as well as freshmen women, would like to know when close study is in effect and when it is not If anyone knows, please advise and help us solve the mystery. Sisters and Pledges of Sigma Kappa Sorority held their annual tea to welcome all new faculty members to Western Carolina University on Tuesday, September 30 at the Methodist Church social hall. The new faculty members were invited to drop in from four-thirty until six o'clock. During this time Russian tea, coffee, cookies, mints, and nuts were served from a festive table. All listers and pledges were on hand to greet and mingle wifl- their guests.
