"Student Government, in assuming its role as an important part of the new "U", will strive, at all times to represent every student on the campus. V P.'s Duties One of Phil Walker's duties as vice president of the student body of Western Carolina University is the presidency of the Student Senate. Walker, a junior psychology major from Tryon, stresses direct communication between student leaders and students. "All sides must be informed," said Walker. JOHN HENNING, President We are open to comments, suggestions , or discussions with any person or persons on campus. I encourage open discus-, sions and will participate in any discussion on student problems on request," said Henning, president of the student body at Western Carolina University. New Level "In our second year with a new president, I feel that student government has reached a new level of effectiveness, judging from the responsiveness of the administration to our requests in the areas that improve the welfare of students," said Henning. Main Duty Henning sees his main duty as being a link between the students and the administration of WCU. He is competent and stable as that link, and has gained a great deal of respect, PHIL WALKER, Vice President Senators must be aware of the problems of the people that they represent, and Walker feels that the revised Senate structure will result in the accomplishment of many student requests. He is enthusiastic about and involved in student government "Due to the two year term of office for senators initiated last year, we have a basis of qualified senators for the upcoming year," said Walker. Learned Much Terri Porche, a junior elementary education major from Asheville, is secretary of the Student Body at WCU. "I really enjoy it I've learned a lot," said Miss Porche. Secretary's Task As secretary of the student body, Miss Porche's duties range from serving as Secretary of the Student Senate to THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN S. G. A. picking up the student government mail at the post office. She takes minutes at all student assemblies and Senate meetings. She must have Senate meeting minutes available to senators and advisors within 24 hours after the meeting. "We're going to have a good year. We've got responsible leaders in student government," said Miss Porche. The major task of student government is the formation and approval of recommendations made at Pre-Session Conference this summer. Steps are being taken to fulfill this task for the betterment of Western Carolina University.
