  • Thursday, October 31,1968 THE WESTERN CAROLBIIAN Page 7 Haywood Optimistic For Cat Baseball Season Bill Haywood, Western Carolina's newly acquired baseball coach; ;s looking forward to a good season on the diamond this spring. "I've always been a pessimist," Haywood said. "I hate to count my chickens before they hatch, but I really think we're going to have a good season this year." Haywood, who pitched this past season with the Washington Senators, is on his first college coaching assignment. He had 43 boys turn out for the first practice and cut this number to 33. After three weeks of fall practice Haywood decided that all 33 would remain on the team. "Unless they quit on their own," he said, "all 33 will be on the teanic I feel that all are capable of playing college baseball." Coach Haywood named three pitchers that he thought would make good starters. Roger Miller, a junior; Ray Southern, a sophomore; and Nolan Sma- thers, a sophomore, will be starting in the spring. He also named a freshman, Dor- rell Whetstine as a possible starter. "Tim Newson will do a good relief job for the team" Haywood said. Newson is a senior. "There is a pretty good battle going on for catcher," Haywood went on. Edgar Cola, who was a starting catcher at Spartanburg Junior College in South Carolina, Norris Mikeal, and Steve Barkley, who caught at Western last year are fighting It out for the position, "Ted Whltworth, a freshman, just might sneak in there," Haywood said. "I have high hopes for him and Whetstine." The only position Coach Haywood was sure of at this time was first base, Billy Wofford is the only first baseman out at the present time. Coach Haywood named several inflelders that have "looked good in fall practice," Eddie Hope was one especially that he mentioned. "Reid Griffith (freshman) has looked exceptionally well at the shortstop position," Haywood said. "He is going to have a tough time beating out Johnny Downs (junior)." "Third base is where my big headache comes in," Haywood stated. "I have four or five boys that are all capable." "Six boys are battling it out in the outfield," Haywood con» tinued. "Two have looked exceptionally well: Ed Thompson and John Booth." M»•-*■) Coach Haywood wanted to tally up four weeks of fall practice before he let the boys, go for the winter. Spring practice will begin In mid-February, "Hopefully in the gym," Haywood s ait "We will be working on conditioning and getting the arms ready." The Catamount sluggers will- play a 26 game schedule beginning on March 15 with Ersklne. The first home game will be on March 20 with that same team. "I think we'll have a good team," Coach Haywood concluded. "I'm hoping that we'll have a good enough team that people will come out and support us." Faculty Club Holds Tennis Tourney A fall tennis tournament has been established By the WCU Faculty Club. Response to this tournament has been very good. Sixteen people have entered In either the singles tournament, the doubles tournament, or both, on the Reid Gymnasium courts. Players should bring an entry fee of $2.00 (payable by check, plase make to: WCU Faculty Club) to the first match. Failure to appear within fifteen minutes of the starting time for a match will result in a forfeit. Should both players forfeit, the winner will be determined by the toss of a coin. The Faculty Club will furnish balls for the tournament. At the end of the match these balls will be awarded to the loser. Thus each entrant will receive a can of balls for his entry fee, the only' exception being the winner of each tournament who will receive atrophy. Matches will be "called on account of rain and/dr darkness and subsequently rescheduled at the discretion of the tournament committee whose rulings will be final. The tournament committee (consisting of Dr. Felsher, Mr. Trevarthen, and Dr. Horton) have establlshedpalrings. They agreed on the names of players of known ability, scattered them WCU Athlete Speaks His Faith Steve Spradling is a product of Pompano Beach, Fla., where he was an All-County footballer and track star. For the past two years Steve has been playing wingback and cornerback for Western Carolina University. He is extremely fast and gifted with a set of golden hands. Steve caught two TD passes In WCU's 35-20 upset of 11th ranked Emory & Henry, In speaking of his faith, he said: "Often times each and every one of us Is faced with ob stacles and problems that seem unapproachable. It's at times like these that I have found much courage and comfort in Matthew 19:26 which says: 'But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, with men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible,' Justknow- ing the fact that through God all things are possible helps me face any problem. Lovln = Felsher, The winners, through a process of elimination will advance through quarter-finals, semi-finals, and then only two players will remain to play for the final match which will determine a champion. The doubles tournament will find first round matches made up of: I. Hamilton = Schrader vs. West - Neufeld 2. Felsher = Brown vs. Hinson - Wright 3.
