My family was apprehensive when, at the ripe old age of 54, I decided to go back to college and get my master's degree. I have been married 30 years and my two children are in their 20's. On the evening before I registered for my first class, my daughter tossed a paperback book onto my lap. Her sigh indicated that she now felt she had done all she could to prepare me for my new adventure. The book? A copy of SEX AND THE COLLEGE GIRL. On how many committees does Taylor Huskins serve, and in what capacity? A. Only 15! At least this was the number counted under the standing committee listings in the WCU catalogue. He is chairman of the Student Affairs, Re-admissions, Orientation, Student-Faculty Judi- Judiciary, and Programs Committee. In addition he has membership on the Summer Session, Fraternities and Sororities, Spring Festival, Student Activities, Student Aid and Awards, Testing and Clinical, Public Relations and Publicity, Conferences, Hospitality, and Planning and Development committees. Q. Each quarter every student is assessed S13.00 labeled Medical and incidental fees. Quoting from an article in the April 18 Sylva Herald, Frank Brown Jr. stated that there were 3,965 students enrolled fall quarter. Therefore (3,965 x 13) we spend $51,545 a quarter for this fee. On a yearly basis of three quarters we spend (51,545 x 3) $154,635.00. I would like to know for what purpose this money is used, and how much actually goes for Medical purposes; also what are some of the incidentals? A. First, you are laboring under a misconception. Every student does not pay S13 for medical and incidental fees. Only those students carrying 12 or more hours each quarter must pay this fee. And, believe it or not there are many students on campus that do not carry 12 hours. The number 3,965 also included students taking night courses at WCU. Five of the 13 dollars goes for medical supplies. This is used according to Lana Phillips, head nurse, for nurses and doctors salaries, maids' salaries, overtime work, medical supplies, prescriptions, etc., building maintenance and repair, heat, light, electricity and water bills. The infirmary is self sufficient. No money comes from the legislature for its operation. It is operated entirely out of this student fee. If a special addition is needed for the infirmary, such as a laboratory, the money is requested from the legislature. The remaining $8 is an incidental fee. Several years ago there was a separate fee charged for almost every department at Western. The Board of Trustees voted to combine all these fees, since sometime during a student's career he would use at least one or two, and usually more of the services provided by the different departments. Q. Is the restaurant in the new student union, really ever to be opened. A. Yes! The restaurant will be opened as soon as a chef can be procured to operated the restaurant, according to James Kirkpatrick, director of business affairs. Q. What are the "qualifications" of the campus policemani? What educational level is required A. The state of North Carolina requires that security patrolmen have at least completed the ninth grade and one year of related work in security and protection of property. James Kirkpatrick stated that qualifications are not very high, but then neither are the salaries. Q. Is anything being planned to alleviate the already deplorable parking problem of commuter parking space? A. Yes and No. A new parking lot in front of the student center, roughly 100 feet wide by 432 feet long, will be cleared soon, and 45 spaces behind Stillwell building and the Library will be ready in the near future. However, the commuter "Mud lot" behind McKee will soon be used for construction of the business education building. Therefore, the spaces will be in a different location, but few if any additional ones will be provided. Q. Why have most elections been scheduled for Tuesday- Thursday when many students have purposely scheduled only, three-hour courses? A. According to Charlie Sutton, a member of the elections committee, students usually have too many classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to find time to vote.
