  • Page 20 News Briefs THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 1966 Christmas Edition Buchanan Announces Holiday Schedule For Hunter Library Jackson County United Fund Surpasses 1966 Goal By $20.15 The Christmas holiday schedule for the library has been announced by Mrs. Lillian Buchanan. The schedule is as follows: Friday, Dec. 16 - 7:50 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19 - Thursday, Dec. 22 and Tuesday, Dec. 27 through Friday, Dec. 3&- - 8:00 - 12:00 and 1:00 - 5:00. The library will be closed the following days: all Saturdays and Sundays, Dec. 23 through Dec. 26 and Dec. 31 through Jan. 2, Radio Club The Radio Club is planning a Christmas party for Thursday night, Dec. 15 from 6:00 until 11:00. The party will be for all Radio Club members and their dates. The regular Wednesday night meeting will be held Dec. 14 at 7:00 in 236 Stillwell Building. He is a member of tie Marshall's Club, the Catamount staff, and the cheerleading squad. Brenda Jean Willis of Baker- sville, N.C, is a Spanish and French major. She is treasurer of Alpha Phi Sigma and the French Club. She also is a member of the SNEA. Barbara Ann Long is a member of the BSU and the SNEA, and has been on the honor roll In her junior and senior years. Gerrald Jay Gantt, a biology major, is president of the Biology Club, vice-president of Alpha Sigma Phi, a member of the German Club, and was on the Dean's List in 1965-66. In previous years he has been on the Alpha honor roll. Hans Stanislaus Borov, a German history major, is pres- Christmas Assembly The annual Christmas program will be presented in Reid Gym on Thursday, Dec. 15. Classes will be dismissed for the 2 p.m. program, and the public is invited to attend, The program is being sponsored by the Public Programs Committee. Student Senate All student organizations, except fraternities and sororities, must have their constitutions into the Student Senate by Jan. 10. Greek organizations must submit their constitutions by Jan. 30, subject to action now pending in the co-operative Student-Faculty Government Nomad The deadline for entries in the "Nomad" is Jan. 10. The word limit for prose submissions is 1300; poetry can be any reasonable length. Janet Marie Smith of High' Shoals, who is majoring in French i and social science, is a sister of Sigma Kappa Sorority. She is secretary of the Student Senate, president of the Panhellenic Organization, in the Marshalls' Club, and a past president of the French Club. Mrs. Mary Ridenhour Trox- ler of Burlington is majoring in elementary education and is a member of the SNEA, the Association of Childhood Education, and has been on the Alpha and Beta honor rolls. James L. Breece, a chem« istry major from Waynesville, is president of the ACS and has been on the Beta honor roll for the last four quarters. Mary B. By the fall of 1968, a new nine-story high rise dormitory is expected to be ready for occupance, however. In other matters, the board was told that Western North Carolina members of the 1967 General Assembly, with their wives or husbands, will be guests of the college next Thursday, Dec. 15, for a luncheon and Christmas program from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Annual reports were made to the board by Dr. W. In 1965-66 he was on the NAIA District 26 All-Star football team and was awarded the Paul A. Reid sportsmanship award. He is on the AlDha honor roll and is a Physical Education Club officer. Sylva's Mrs. Nancy R. Thorne, an elementary education major, is on the Alpha; honor roll and is a member of the SNEA. Cullowhee's Miss Nelda * Hardin Scroggs, a business education major, is in the SNEA, Phi Beta Lambda, the Society for the Advancement of Management, and the National Business Education Association. She is also the musical director of the Little Theatre. Hayno'id D. Valentine, from Wvynesville, education maior, is a member >f ihe SNEA a.id Association for Childhood Education. He has been on the Beta and Alpha honor rolls for the past two years. Shirley Jean Thomas, of Bryson City, majiring in elementary education with a concentration in. hi story and geography, is a member of the SNEA and ACE. She is a charter ■fmber of Zeta Iota Chapter First Time In Ten-Year History Of Fund That Goal Has Been Reached For the first time in the 10-year history of the Jackson County United Fund the set goal has been reached and surpassed. Joe Evans, Campaign Chairman, reported that the 25 con- tri' uting participant groups had given $20.15 over the $19,982 goal. Evans expressed his gratified to all contributors and workers in the drive. He said, 'liisy are the people who made ;t no over." A statement of thanks was also issued by Dr. Paul H. Reid, UF Board of Directors chairman. Dr. Reid praised Evans in particular for "his fine leadership during the campaign." Evans anticipates further of Zata Tau Alpha and was on the Alpha honor roll for two quarters and the Beta honor roll for one quarter. Betty Ann Sandlin, also of Bryson City, m?joring in elementary education and is in the Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society. She has been on the Beta and klphn honor rolls since enrolling here in 1963. Hendsrsonville's Mrs. Diana Stokes Bagwell, a biology and education major, is a member of the Biology Club, the NCEA, and the NEA. Danny Ronald Dietz, also of Sylva, is majoring in business administration and finance, and is vice-president oi Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity for 1966-67. He was a member of the Pre- session Planning Conference; for 1966, assistant totliePresi-: dent Pro-Tern of the North Carolina Senate in 1965. Also of Sylva, William R. Kilpatrick, majoring in biology, chemistry and English, is a member of the ACS, Alpha Phi Sigma, and the English Seminar. He was on the Dean's List last year. Robert Earle Buckner, of Waynesville, a music education major, is a brother of Alpha Phi Omega. He is in the WCC band, chorus, pep band, and stace band. He is the band director at Sylva-Webster High School Karen Lee Schmitz of Mebane, majoring in business, is an Alpha Phi Sigma member; a me ber of the SNEA, National R'.isiness Education Association, and ihe Society for the AdAanc3mc.it of Management; fTi i: i pledges and contributions from non-residents who maintain summer homes in Jackson County. This year the United Fund has the largest budget since its organization in 1957-58. All hut one of the 12 soliciting divisions in the UF drive topped last year's giving. The largest increase was in the Downtown Commercial Division with a gain of $',179.58. Total contributions and i ledges were $3,052. ■The OutlyingCohiiiiercialDivision reported an increase of $1,029.49 to $1,233.24. Personnel of Western Carolina College gave $3,343.25. This was $841.75 over last year's contributions. An increase of $895 over last year made the contributions by County Public School personnel $2,314. The Professional Division's increase was $17. The total was $1,643. Special Gifts* $1,587.12 was up $270.42. The Public Employees Division gave $786, an increase of $17. The total for individual residential contributions was $618, a jump of $287.04. Employees of C. J. Harris Community Hospital increased their contributions by $107.55. Their total was $687.85. Personnel of the Jackson County Industrial Education Center gave $95. Miscellaneous contributions totaled $92.39. The new Air Force Junior ROTC program may be offered by either private or public iiigji schools. and the Best Actress Award recipient of 1964-65 and the Distinguished Acting Award in 1965-66. Alvin Kriss Sands of Enlvu, a maiii' in b :siness administration, is on the AIdui honor roll. Roger William Change, a social sicaoce major from Thoma.sville, is in toe International Relations Club, the Young Democrats Club, and is a charter member of the Sigma Phi Kappa social fraternity. Rosemary Parker, a professional writing and English maior, is on the Collide Center Board, in the English Seminar, the SFJC and Delta Zeta Sorority.
