  • Western Carolinian/November 11, 1982 7 Umstead Act From page 1 bad for the university, and they no longer wish to put stock in the bookstore that is carried by local stores, except a few gift items that are there as a convenience to the student. The Umstead Act does make specific exception, such as the University bookstore exception just outlined, and the operation by the university system of inns. True enough, the service can be abused by outside individuals, who use the University Inn purely to save money. The effect on local business from these abuses is probably minimal. The possible harm is that Hardee's loses the sale of a hamburger and a Coke or that an area motel is out of one night's paying guests, but the total difference that these examples makes in a year's time makes them seem inconsequential. These points were discussed at length at a meeting between University Administrators and the CCFE on September 28. This meeting brought some understanding to both sides, and much was accomplished. Many questions were raised and answered or shelved until the university could obtain more information. These questions will be answered as the university gets the facts, or corrects any faults. The university feels that they are not in violation of the Umstead Act and that they never were. In the interest of community relations, however, the university is willing to open dialogue about merchants' concerns. So, all in all, what could have been some very damaging allegations against the university have been averted. The incident has made the university take a look at what it is doing and how its actions affect community relationships. This has opened a line of communication between the university and local businesses. Hopefully, this rapport will keep situations such as this from happening again. PUSH From page 1 units is like.
