Western Carolinian/September 2, 1982 \h! Its football season. It is also intramural Softball and cross country season. Just because it is fall does not mean the sports fan has only the World Series to look forward to. Cullowhee is not the world, but it does have its share of lovely Softball pitchers. photos by Mark Haskett Sports Lady Netters Bear Watching by: Karen Ashe Women's Volleyball at Western Carolina will oil k iall\ begin on September 10 in Asheville, at the i \( Asheville rournament. Participating in the I NC A tournament will be Georgia, Universit) ol Smith Carolina. High Point, ISC-Spartanburg, last rennessee, Man Hill, UNC-Asheville, and the \i i Cats The 1982 Lad) Cats will be undei the direction ot new head coach, Irish Howell. Howell is assuming the head coach position of the lads Netters after spending two years as a graduate assistant in the PI department and the previous year as assistant to Coach 1'eele in sottball and volleyball. This season, besides serving as volleyball head coach. Howell will be an assistant coach ol basketball and work in sports information. Howell graduated from Winthrop College in 1974. While at Winthrop. she was a standout for lour years in volleyball and in her senior year she saw her team travel to the nationals. Alter graduation from Winthrop she taught middle school physical education for two and a hall years and high school PE for three years. Each year she coached volleyball, two years were spent coaching sottball, and one year was spent coaching both track and basketball, so her coaching experience is versitile, to say the least The 1981-82 lady Cat Netters won seventeen straight games, came in second in the state and fourth in the region last season. From last sear's squad come ten returnees and one recruit on Howell's 1982 team. On I uesday and Wednesday. September 24 and 25 try-outs will be held to fill the only vacant position. A freshman, Robin Langley from New Smyrna Beach, Florida is now the newest I udy Netter. Other Lady Netters composing the 1982 team are Anna White, also a contributor to WCU's lady basketball team. According to Howell, White "has improved over the summer and should be a real standout." Nancy Sutton, another returnee, enters this season after recovering from knee surgery performed last spring. Sutton has been released from her doctor, but Howell believes "she is not yet up to full strength." Ginger Eichhorn, a team spirit contributor, and Janice Burke from the softball team are both also included on the team, along with Debra Talbert. Judy Greene, who according to Howell, "is one of the best setters in the area," is back on the team, and she also participates in softball and basketball. Howell called Greene, "a tremendous athlete." Sandra Fleming, an exclusive volleyball player, and what Howell termed, "an excellent hitter," will be returning. Fleming was aH-state.and all state-all tourney during last year's 1981-82 season. Shree Kasch is also returning from the '81-82 season. Another female athlete, Robyn Keeler, an all- american in softball, will be returning to the team. Freahman recruit Emily Holliday from Camden, S.C. will contribute to the 1982 Lady Netters this season as well. Howell calls her Lady Netters "an excellent group to work with." Howell adds that she is optimistic about the upcoming season. At present, she is considering changing the team's basic defense, and changing a few positions from last year in order to emphasize each girl's contributing strengths. Overall, Howell is hopeful in winning the Southern conference, and should her team accomplish that task and compile a good winning record for the season, a possible qualification for the nationals is also a big possibility for her team. The Western Carolinian would like to wish this year's volleyball team atleast as much success as last year's team if not more, ******* WCU Intramural Fall Semester Activity handouts are now available to all interested students, faculty, and staff.
